(47,393 posts)David Frum to be witty. Donald Trump has brought out the best in a lot of conservative republicans or former republicans. They are now free to be human.

(1,654 posts)It must be a really freeing experience not to just spout out scripted talking points.

(1,336 posts)...of course he has a sense of humour (and can be quite self-effacing too)!
His stepmom is my neighbour. She has a sense of humour too! And so do I.
Having said that, I'm delighted that Frum is not a dyed-in-the-wool conservative after all. He's smart, well-educated, and becoming wiser as the years go by.

(47,393 posts)I didn't realize that Frum was a Canadian. it appears he has dual citizenship.
Yes, he does seem to have become wiser.

(1,336 posts)on CBC TV's nightly news. She died of chronic leukaemia and passed about 20 years ago. His dad was a dentist turned real estate developer. He remarried a long-time friend (my neighbour) and died about 6 or 7 years ago. His twin sister Linda is a Canadian Senator (conservative).
Our Conservatives tend to be moderates (although a few members espouse rightwing stuff like abortion and others consider themselves fiscal conservatives),and our Liberals are also moderates with a slight tendency towards the left. I think I prefer the relative boredom induced by our two main political parties

(47,393 posts)Most of our republican politicians today really aren't conservatives anymore. They tend to be opportunistic politicians who will do and say whatever will win votes or they are radical, extremists. My parents were republicans and their party didn't resemble in any way what we see today. Like your conservatives, they were more moderate than their opponents. Of course, there were extremists like the John Birchers, but they were few in numbers and regarded as a joke.
It really started going downhill with Nixon and has only gotten worse over the years.

(43,124 posts)The two camps didn't actually engage that much. Biden had the luxury of an intense understanding of the opposition which was destroying itself. Biden could almost be said to have played a rope-a-dope strategy, so when he needed to engage, the debates, he hit hard. Trump defined himself, and then Biden confirmed it. Trump's attempts to define Biden were ridiculous. Antifa was a disconnect, "Sleepy Joe" was a fail, Ukraine Fake Dirt was well known by the summer. The first Democratic debate, where Trump camp dreamed up "Sleepy Joe" was a sleeper strategy, I still think Biden underplayed his hand to seek better opportunity going forward.
