aines Township, Michigan A 26-year-old Michigan man was killed after an explosion that occurred during a baby shower, according to Gaines Township authorities.
A small cannon device that was fired in the backyard of a home by the homeowner blew up, spraying metal shrapnel that struck an unidentified Hartland man who was standing nearby. The man was taken in serious condition to Hurley Medical Center in Flint, where he later died.
Three parked cars and the garage where the baby shower was being held were also struck by shrapnel.
Telephone calls Sunday to Gaines Township authorities for additional information werent immediately returned.
In recent years, some gender-reveal events where devices eject confetti, balloons or other colored objects to announce a soon-to-be-born childs sex have taken a dangerous turn.
In September, a couples plan to reveal their babys gender with blue or pink smoke sparked a wildfire that burned thousands of acres in Southern California. And in 2019, a homemade explosive used to reveal a babys gender killed 56-year-old Pamela Kreimeyer in Knoxville, Iowa. The device was meant to spray powder but instead blew up like a pipe bomb.

(146,350 posts)This entire gender reveal nonsense has gone way past its usefulness.
Buy some pink or blue cards or balloons. Why would a couple care what sex their baby is, in the first place? And why would anyone else care?
It's a totally ridiculous event, really.
When I was in the child-bearing and fathering age, everyone said, "I don't care if it's a boy or girl, as long as it's healthy."
Why does anyone care? Why would it matter? It's a baby. It's a new life. It was the parent's goal. Why would it matter?
Said by someone who deliberately did not reproduce, despite being married twice and fully disclosing my intention not to make any extra babies. I don't mind if others make babies, but why does the sex or gender of the baby matter? It's a genetic crapshoot. If they want one sex, will they be disappointed if they get the other?
For Jebus' sake!

(47,741 posts)And does every occasion have to be turned into some YouTube performance, trying to outdo your friends and acquaintances? I've been to some rather silly showers, but never any that could be deemed dangerous.
I suspect someone put stupid pills in the US water supply.

Weddings have gotten really weird too, like it is more about putting on a great show than about getting married.

I wanna see the cannon
Demovictory9
(32,493 posts)The cannon the homeowner fired was similar to a Signal Cannon, more commonly used as a novelty item. Police said the homeowner bought the cannon at an auction prior to the event and had fired the cannon several times before.
"The cannon is designed to create a big flash, a loud noise and create smoke," Michigan State Police said in a news release. "The cannon did not contain any projectiles, but it is suspected that the gun powder loaded into the device caused the cannon to fracture, resulting in shrapnel being spread in the area."
