ICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Saturday evening Update: Wichita police arrested 34-year-old Kevin Palmer of Wichita on a charge of felony murder in connection with a teenage girl who died after she was dragged by a stolen vehicle.
Officers responded to the call around noon on Saturday. A grey Ford Escape was traveling westbound on Kellogg at Meridian dragging the girl. Officers located the Ford Escape at Kellogg and West Street. The 13-year-old was caught on the outside of the vehicle. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
The investigation revealed the teen was sitting on the drivers side rear of the Escape while it was parked outside of a nearby restaurant running. Her family went into the restaurant to get food as she remained in the vehicle. Palmer got into the drivers seat and took off with the vehicle. The girl tried get out of the vehicle while it was moving. As she exited, she got caught in the seatbelt on the outside of the vehicle. Palmer continued to drive for several miles.
A citizen saw the deadly situation, called 911, and followed the vehicle. At Kellogg and West Street, Palmer stopped the Escape and ran. He was quickly arrested by officers who arrived at the call.

I don't know how they can get over the thought of what happened. IN that case also the family had stopped to pick p food .
Just a regular day doing an everyday normal thing and you come back without your child.

(25,848 posts)Just another reminder that leaving a car running is a Very Bad Idea. This kind of thing has happened more often than people realize over the years. Some time back it was a baby who was similarly dragged in a hijacked car. I've read of far too many similar incidents.
Please, please, please, turn off the engine. Take the keys with you when you go into a building. The time you think you are saving isn't worth it.

(246 posts)My thoughts and prayers- (actual ones, not the GOP kind) go out to your friends and this poor young girl. That thief just signed his life away, that has to be murder 1.

(7,185 posts)I am so sorry.
I always lock the car if I am inside car waiting for someone - whether or not car running. I dont say it to suggest this young girl did anything wrong - but only to say I think about carjackings and so lock doors.

(14,490 posts)At least two more American families devastated by senseless crime.
We've had a big surge in auto-related crime here in Louisville but mostly break-ins. A sign of these desperate times, I suppose and it may get worse.
