According to Brook Park police, KAREN Turner was arrested on Jan. 18 at a Marcs store for refusing to leave. The Parma Heights resident was asked by employees to exit because she was in violation of the stores mask policy. When she wouldn't, those employees called the cops.
Body camera video shows Turner refusing to leave or provide identification to Brook Park officers. Police eventually got her outside... but not without a struggle. Eventually, she was placed in the cruiser.
Turner pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of criminal trespassing, resisting arrest and failure to disclose information since she would not hand over her identification.

(2,387 posts)She was arrested for all that other shit.
Important distinction.
The maskholes will scream "unconstitutional", but trespass and resisting arrest are not even arguable in this case.

(5 posts)I would like to see local Sheriff's departments deputize citizens to confront mask violators. The deputies wouldn't have police power. They couldn't arrest anyone but the could confront them as an authoritative enforcement officer. It might make the violators take notice.

(5 posts)The deputies would be authorized to approach anyone appearing to violate masking or lock-down orders, confronting them, obtaining their identities, if possible, and reporting them to the appropriate authorities. They would be provided with appropriate badges of authority: badges, caps, jackets, etc. The deputies would not have police power other than enforcing the public health order.

(8,864 posts)similar to a parking ticket, with a fine associated with that ticket.
The person not wearing a mask, would simply ignore it, not realizing that it's an official ticket.
A bill will arrive in the mail and with fine amounts including late fees and interest.

(10,811 posts)Good one on the cops for arresting her ass. Maybe the $5000 fine will help clear her head, make her think twice before exposing the public during a pandemic.

(18,745 posts)She was handled very very gently, and that's the right thing. This was a 55 year old lady who posed no physical threat, the correct amount of force was used. Too often times I hear people seemingly suggest that the police should have handled her rougher because that's the way they would have treated her if she was black. I do not want that, what I want is for suspects to be treated with respect and the correct amount of force regardless of their race or any other characteristic. The white privilege she's probably not even aware of afforded her to be arrested safely and with the least amount of force possible. We all know there's a much greater chance that if she were black she would have been slammed to the pavement with a lot of force, that's what needs to stop.
I imagine that the social consequences of looking like an idiot on TV will be greater for this woman than the legal consequences she will face. I do hope she gets a creative judge though that can sentence her to community service in an environment that she can learn something in.

(3,373 posts)Bc it makes people think and realize that there ARE consequences to their action. Down where I live, one man had to be carried out of a store by his son for acting like a jackass. Thing was, PDs initial response was tsk tsk. Until we all passed around information and had people calling in to demand accountability. A new investigator was placed on the case. The man skipped town w his son. I believe there is a warrant out for their arrest. Long story short, since then, we dont hear anymore of these assholes going into stores harassing employees and other customers. I know the store is pressing charges as they should. It is making these dipshits think twice about their awful behaviors.
