On Sunday or maybe it was Saturday evening, after my husband finally took the damn football game to our bedroom TV, I was checking in (as is my wont) on what O*N and the other RW news channels were saying.
On O*N, it was the "Investigative" Show just ending up, and this young anchor was reciting every one of the Pillow Guy's assertions (dead people voting, juveniles voting, out-of-state voters, etc) *except* for accusing the voting machine manufacturers of malfeasance. She was outraged and incredulous--how could such blatant criminal activity go a)unreported by the Lamestream and b)unpunished? It was clear, according to her, that Tr*mp had won the election, and won big.
This is wrong, and it's unacceptable. Everything she said has either been disproven, debunked, or laughed out of court, and yet there it was laid out plain, obviously to rile up the believers.
We are all damaged and endangered by this. How can we counter the "official"--by network TV--spread of lies--of incendiary lies? The injured parties are not the machine-producing companies; the injured party is US. Who can sue? Who can bring O*N to court to prove these false allegations? Can an entity like the ACLU act on behalf of the American people and sue?
Outlets like this, which are continuing to stoke the fires of insurrection and treason, must be forced to put up or shut up--and not just shut up, but make amends by broadcasting statements that what they said was wrong and a lie.
Does the DOJ have a role? How about someone who was injured or whose loved one was killed on 1/6? We are *all* damaged; how can we *all* sue?

(14,173 posts)Same goes for Fox News. Even as they are planning to reduce further their taking head news programs, and replace them with more far right opinion heads.
The problem is who decides and what. Fox and the others could say Rachel Maddow's show on MSNBC is also an opinion based show. Or Joy Reid on CNN. Even though they base those shows on factual news stories.

(10,828 posts)In 2022, 2024 and beyond. As long as it takes to purge the political system of Trump and his acolytes.
I agree that these alternative news sites and right-wing radio jocks have and continue to spread the chain of lies that Republicans have supported and Trump took full advantage of during his term and even now.
Our defense to this constant Big Lie reinforcement is being as vocal and repetitive with the truth as Trumpers are with their lies, of pushing through successful and popular policy, and then making sure the public knows where the relief is coming from.
Sad to say but we're now in a position where we need to change 'hearts and minds' of our own fellow citizens. There are reports of Americans leaving the GOPQ party in all 50 states since the insurrection. Not enough to make a true difference but a good sign nonetheless. We need to encourage that exodus.
Trying to shut down the Merchants of Deceit and Hate will only result in cries and consternation about First Amendment rights. Republicans are skilled at boomeranging Democratic opposition in these matters.
We want these channels to close down? We work on advertisers, call them out for what they're supporting: fascism, bigotry, unAmerican zealotry. We threaten and follow through with boycotts. Not all will respond. But when enough do? The market itself will begin shutting down the channels.
