(16,834 posts)it will be negotiated down to $10 or maybe $12 an hour, or they might get the $15, but it will be phased in over several years. It's got to go up some, though. It's getting to the point that people are spending all their waking hours at work and still not making ends meet.

Looks like historically increases have been phased in over several years. Makes sense as it allows companies to plan and budget.
The last increase that ended in 2009 was about 40% increase over a three year phase in. We are looking at more than 100% increase -- so a longer phase in period could be justified -- whether it is 5, 7 or 8 years it would still be the most substantial increase in minimum wage ever.
I would love it if it could be changed faster but 3 years would appear to the bare minimum and for a change this substantial it would appear that 5 or 7 makes more sense.
The BIG CAVEAT -- there has to be some way to penalize companies that try tp get around this by calling their employees "independent contractors" so that each employee ends up being a company of one. The Ubers, LYFT, etc. crowd that love to deny that they have employees cannot continue to skate on this. Better than penalties would be to eliminate this altogether.
