Woman Used Gorilla Glue Spray Instead Of Hair Spray, Here Is What Happened
Bruce Y. Lee
Well, it looks like Gorilla Glue may work as advertised. But in this case thats not necessarily a good thing.
The Gorilla Glue website describes its Gorilla Spray Adhesive as a heavy duty, multi-purpose product which forms a clear, permanent bond that is moisture resistant. This suggests that if you spray the Gorilla adhesive on something, it aint going to be easy to remove. That may be fine if you are gluing together the pieces of the massive One Direction shrine in your bedroom but not if you accidentally put it on your hair.
Apparently, Tessica Brown from Louisiana found this out the hard way after she used the Gorilla Spray Adhesive on her hair instead of her usual hair spray, Got2b Glued. And in this case hard meant like rock-hard. Her hair and hair style were essentially sealed in place, sort of like those hairstyles on Lego figurines. A trip to the emergency room, over 15 hair washes, and treatments such as applying acetone and using tea tree oil and coconut oil have not gotten her hair to move. She described her resulting plight on Instagram and TikTok videos that subsequently went viral (not in a Covid-19 but a social media way). The following tweet contains one of these videos:

After hearing about Browns struggles, the Gorilla Glue company did tweet out the following:

(179,005 posts)Using the glue on her hair was clearly a major mistake, given the consequences. That's putting it as nicely as I can because there's a lot more that I'm thinking.
But, my point stands. I'll never make the mistake of doing that since I never use hairspray. It's not part of my routine to spray anything on my hair.

(76,695 posts)There was a time when your concerns were well founded.
But, the acrylates used in hairspray react with moisture in the air to polymerize in 50-100 milliseconds.
By the time it's inhaled, it's not much more than inert dust particles.
The propellant, (iso-butane or dimethyl propane), is inert, as alkanes don't react without a free radical initiator.
Back when the propellant was freon (halocarbons) and the polymers took 2 or 3 seconds to consume all the monomer & resin, they were way more dangerous!
They took out the freon for ozone depletion reasons, not product safety. Product safety was the reason for changed the reactivity of the polymer, though.

EndlessWire
(8,103 posts)It might be that the hair follicle roots might be damaged. Is her hair growing at all?
Wow, I feel bad for her. She should do whatever it takes to save her hair growth. Keeping a shellacked mess up there won't necessarily save her from baldness. Make a judgment call and do what you have to do.
I think she should shave it off and help her scalp to breathe. That way she could perhaps apply something to loosen up the new growth. There are always wigs to wear while she waits to see.
People put perms on all the time. Hair regrows. This is the perm of all time. Maybe she could use laser light to help herself?

(28,493 posts)was that she should simply shave everything off. Hair does grow back. Well, most of the time it does. Sometimes it doesn't but that's an entire different conversation.
LisaL
(47,423 posts)Her hair is likely dead anyway, but razor might not be able to shave it off.

Act_of_Reparation
(9,116 posts)The hair is coated in glue, and likely bonded to her scalp.
EndlessWire
(8,103 posts)The solution is acetone (fingernail polish remover) to soften the roots. She can then follow up with sea salt mixed with coconut oil.
She's going to have to shave the hair off and start over.
YRMV. Disclaimer: I am not a beautician. I just wouldn't put glue on my own hair. It's going to take a long time to fix this.

(31,261 posts)The hairdresser would likely have to use scissors and make sure that every hair is cut before pulling it off, that stuff can result in hairs being pulled out by the roots, if the exposed hair is not cut cleanly. I tangled with that stuff once by getting it on my bare hands, never again. I buy gloves now whenever I use it, it is so bonding that I can only use gloves once.

And all those gigantic cans of hairspray he goes through every day. Count 6 - 10, that adds up to serious money.

(31,261 posts)I have the nasty tendency of not wearing gloves for some activities, like all home tasks. Fortunately the skin on the palms and fingers is very forgiving, it is tolerant to a lot of things and sheds fairly rapidly relative to other skin on the body, so my two baths per day, screwing with the right skin, and the natural skin shedding counter-acted my idiocy and got my ass out of a self made sling.

(113,954 posts)my benefit-of-the-doubt for her just evaporated. Good Gawd. She doesn't read the label and she thinks GG is responsible?
She wouldn't want me on that jury. Just sayin.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)Yes, I believe she would easily lose such a lawsuit. Maybe if Gorilla Glue made the hairspray also, maybe then she would have a smidgen of a bat in hell chance of winning the lawsuit.
Now the GG company will have to print "DO NOT SPRAY ON HAIR" on can labels to protect themselves.

(7,987 posts)This has GOT to be one of the dumbest women out there.
First she complains about what happened to her hair and then adds "it's not by choice".
Then she goes on to say "Well, I didn't have any more (brand name) spray, so I used this."
And holds up a can of spray glue!
Best of all, she broadcasts her complaint on the internet.
No pity from me, dearie. None at all.
