You know what warms my cockles?

While the bloated, orange, bloodsucking tick is getting acquitted by his loyal lickspittles, President Biden is doing his fucking job.

That’s what warms my cockles.

... and think it is something "gay".

Etymology

First documented use in 1671. Corruption of Latin cochleae (“ventricles”) in cochleae cordis (“ventricles of the heart”).[1][2] Earlier attempt to explain the etymology no longer noted in reference works: Possibly due to resemblance of cockles to hearts.[2]

The ventricles of the heart are vaguely snail shaped. Hence the Latin word from their word for snail, like the cochlea in our ears.

It's humbling to ponder on the weight of ages we wield with our speech.

Cochlea....who knew? From a guy who's dealt with chronic, weather related dizziness for 42 years, that's profound.

have the same folksy feel to say.

However, it's exactly what Mr. Spock would say if he had only one heart, red blood, and emotions.

Probably. Most likely.

Or something similar.

Thank you for the etymology!

I always thought it meant warming the cockles like the shellfish. Which are delicious.

This is what I got from Wikipedia, but it doesn't sound right:

A cockle is an edible, marine bivalve mollusc. Although many small edible bivalves are loosely called cockles, true cockles are species in the family Cardiidae. True cockles live in sandy, sheltered beaches throughout the world. The distinctive rounded shells are bilaterally symmetrical, and are heart-shaped when viewed from the end...

Shouldn't the def of cockles be something funny, like the crazy part of your brain that thinks everything is funny?

Nice. However, they really must be served at least warm, if not steaming hot, it seems to me.

A guy can't get cockles here in the US, but a bowl of small steamed clams can be had on both coasts. Same thing, really. I really prefer mussels, though.

"Cockles and Mussels, alive, alive-O!"

So cries Molly Malone:

In fact, so is a human heart, sort of. It has the same sort of symmetry as a bivalve mollusk.
