Rush Limbaugh, the most successful talk-radio host in history, is ailing. And so is the medium he helped revolutionize over the past 30 years.
Faced with aging and shrinking audiences, competition from newer technologies and financial problems for the biggest station owners, talk radio is in decline both as a business and a political force. Once a leading platform for popularizing conservative candidates and policies, talk radio is on the verge of becoming background noise, drowned out by a cacophony of voices on podcasts, cable TV and social media.
The formats crisis comes as its biggest star is battling to stay on the air indeed, he is battling for his life. Limbaugh, 70, has been frank about his struggle with what he said last year is advanced lung cancer. I wasnt expected to make it to October, and then to November, and then to December, he said on the air just before Christmas. And yet, here I am.
Limbaughs uncertain future confronts the talk-radio business, and conservatism generally, with the prospect of losing its most galvanizing figure. Since leaping from a local station in Sacramento to nationally syndicated stardom in 1988, Limbaugh has been the bullhorn behind every important conservative initiative, from the Contract With America in the mid-1990s, to the tea party movement of the Obama era to the ascent of Donald Trump.

(77,795 posts)Before that, their line-up was genteel - doctors and psychologists, Dr Joy BROWNE, Dr Dean EDELL, Dr David VISCOTT who were educative, polite/mostly - with the local owners doing an hour of their wingnuttiness. When LIMBO burst on the scene, the local owners took 2-3 years to go Full-Wingnut, ditching ABC for Fox, and the whole line-up being O'REILLY, LIMBO, HANNITY, Laura SCHLESSINGER, etc.
And they stayed that way, to date. Five or more years ago the locals were bought out by a family owning 15 stations, with the m. o. being CASH, meaning they left this wingnut station alone with its wingnut format while DIVERSIFYING with the other of their stations all different formats (country, ethnic, sports, easy listening) - get it? They kept this wingnut niche amid all the other different niches to rake in diversified cash.

(27,639 posts)Its like after the great ClearChannel Purge of progressive talk stations in 2007 the same hosts and shows we enjoyed were still available but, when you had to try to tune in to some tiny low-powered station out in the boondocks instead of one of the main stations in the big city, very few people were able to do so.

(17,506 posts)In my town our local station is the only place for real local news, otherwise we get what the Pittsburgh area stations want to cover on their afternoon TV broadcasts.
This is what people tune in to to listen to the area high school sports - a big deal here - and the local small college sports. This is where the county commissioners come on to talk about what's happening in the county. It's where you can hear big local events like the 4th of July fireworks or regatta or car cruise or simulcast of Sunday worship services and so on. They do their own programming from 6:30AM until about 1PM, then it's all syndicated rw talk interrupted only by sports (Pgh and local) broadcasts in the evening.

(63,221 posts)It never fails. The most evil people just seem to live forever. Sometimes I think we actually ARE in hell, and that maybe death is a release from it. It's the only way I can make sense of it.

(8,178 posts)I remember making note of that when I was a young kid. My very best friend drowned in a weird under toe thingy over out of the outer banks in North Carolina. It was shocking, unexpected, and he was such a beautiful soul. That's when I decided there was no such thing as "god" but I did believe good and evil existed. I could not ever make sense of my friend drowning when he was such a good swimmer. But it happened and I've seen this phenom over my life from time to time.
And that's just what we have going on in this world.

(63,221 posts)However, even though it's a cliche, it unfortunately seems to be true much of the time. I have seen this over and over in my life as well, which I why have decided never to be too good of a person, just in case.

(8,178 posts)I was only 12 then.. almost a lifetime ago. But that memory comes up from time to time whenever inexplicable tragedy strikes in anyone's lives whether someone I know or a complete stranger reported in the news or elsewhere.
Not even sure why the memory came up now, except in the context of the evil that lives on and on and on to commit more evil.
And yes, we all have this experience especially if we live long enough! Right now, reliving Jan 6th, from the safe distance and vantage point of my home on the opposite side of the country, still the most visceral felt horror and enormous sorrow and anger towards the so called Republican Party who pretend this event was a nothing burger, and we should just "move on".
I appreciate your warm thoughts shared with me. I have to say, I'm feeling guilty for indulging in my own personal stuff, almost inappropriate in this context.

(9,989 posts)My best friend in high school died at 17 of a cancer that people that young are not supposed to get. But she did, and it took her. I still remember her burial, in an old family churchyard in the VA mountains. The only relatives buried nearby were her great-grandparents and great-aunts and great-uncles. Her grandparents and parents were still alive.

(8,178 posts)and knowing we all have had to suffer through others who don't deserve to share the same air we breath while they are free to spew evil laden lies and hatred while claiming victimizing at the same time, is frustrating if not infuriating.
But then we need only to turn to those who are with us that we love and cherish to be reminded that we are surrounded by love and joy and goodness. I try to keep that perspective but it's harder during these times.

(17,428 posts)I love music, but even I get bored with that when I'm driving.
I caught myself, years ago, close to succumbing to the lure of Hate Radio. I've been liberal and progressive my entire life, but I found myself, on long drives, being drawn toward "talk radio".
Maybe it's just having someone talking to you to stave off the boredom of driving, but talk radio is alluring. Unfortunately, if you're a liberal and you find yourself bored on the road, there were not options for you. You pretty much could only find "conservative" talk.
Thankfully, I was able to go Cold Turkey before Hate Radio could sink their hooks in me.
But, it's pretty fucking relentless.
I used to make the long drive from Naval Air Station Lemoore, CA to Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, CA quite often.
In the deepest blue state you could find, there were hours and hours, and miles and miles, where you could find nothing on AM but hate radio. In some parts of my drive, i could find Rush on 6 separate stations at the same time. Seriously, six stations, each with Rush. You could push the buttons to change stations, and there was Rush, with a second or so delay. I guess that was because of the different locations.
We should not kid ourselves. The reach and appeal of online nuttiness is not comparable with the reach and appeal of Hate Radio.
