I do believe that the House Managers had a strategic plan to glorify Pence a bit to quite possibly reach few Repubs since he's one of them. It showed the stark contrast between Trump and him as if to say, "Who are you going to side with here? The traitor or the guy who actually behaved in a more respectable fashion and with more leadership qualities?" I have no idea if that was their thought process, but I did come away from that with thinking that at least Pence didn't obey THAT one trump order.
