Does anyone have a sense of which Rethuglican Senators

Last edited Wed Feb 10, 2021, 11:06 PM - Edit history (1)

Are likely to convict?

Of course we have the six Senators that voted that the trial is constitutional as prospects. I am wondering if we can identify 20-30 others that we can collectively call. I think McConnell is a prospect (nothing more, but a prospect).

The House Managers' case is so compelling. Surely, some are "concerned".

Here's what we've compiled so far based on responses:

Murkowski*
Collins*
Sasse*
Romney*
Toomey*
Cassidy*
Lankford
Daines
Thune
McConnell (this is one I'll add)
Tillis
Burr

(* = ones who voted Senate impeachment trial is constitutional)

The House Managers' case is incredible. However, if there is nothing more than the videos, trump probably won't be convicted, unless there is a political groundswell to persuade them otherwise.

I am truly hoping there is evidence that Trump or his henchpeople are directly tied to the insurrection. I am sure they are, and the January 5 "war council" at the Trump International Hotel is tantalizing. I am 100% sure that there is far more direct connection to the insurrection and trump, but I have no specific evidence except for a gut feel. I hope the Managers do have this evidence. If so and if that can be brought out, that would be devastating to trump. That would be a sure conviction.

However, let's not be a hostage to fortune!

On edit: And let me make this perfectly clear (and I'm not citing Nixon): let's identify Senators like Daines, Lankford, and McConnell, who we think are offended by all this, regardless of whether there is "new" evidence. There is NO DOUBT that Trump should be convicted, and we need to find whatever soft spots that there are with the ReThugs.

DUers: we are "only" 11 votes away from conviction. This is a devastating case against the monster trump already. Please think strategically and let's call/write to R Senators who might be persuadable.

(no initial cap of trump is deliberate, since he deserves no capital letters.)

will go against their GOD (Trump). The big question is will those that have blindly voted REpublican for decades change after finding out that they have been played for decades. Old White guys are a despicable lot of mostly grifters. Praise Jesus.

# Four more max ReThugs come over

# worth while to consider a secret vote ?

# 10 ReThugs no show on day of vote

Balance 40 R
Balance 50 D
_____________
Total...... 90 in sen.chamber for vote.
.....2/3 = 60 of total senators who showed ....................for vote and in the room.

50 Dem + 10 ReThugs = 60 = 2/3 = BINGO!

They could say they all slipped on banana peels, twisted their legs and had to go to the emergency room for a leg support bandage.

Let's still list the "soft" Rethugs:

This is what I have now based on the constitutionality vote and suggestions on this OP:

Murkowski*
Collins*
Sasse*
Romney*
Toomey*
Cassidy*
Lankford
Daines
Thune
McConnell (this is one I'll add)

(* = ones who voted Senate impeachment trial is constitutional)

Let's add about 20-30 more in terms of those who might be easier to sway than others, and let's communicate with them. I am under no illusions, but let's give it a shot! WE JUST NEED 11-12 more from the the Rs that voted that the Senate trial is constitutional!

I've emailed once. I'll email again.

Contact as many Senators as possible--if you aren't from their state, zillow up a high dollar suburb and use an address from that district.

Maybe the other Nebraska Senator. If every one of the six convinces just two others...

the rest? Nope. Not an ounce of courage or conviction in any of them.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think I am.

Republican John Thune, minority whip: "I think they've done a good job connecting the dots, and the President's Twitter feed is a matter of public record and they've done — I think I said an effective job of going back several months and showing that public record."

14. I don't agree, especially if there is new evidence directly linking Trump to the insurrection
Wed Feb 10, 2021, 10:51 PM
Feb 2021

Let's see if there is that evidence.

No one thought that we would win the GA Senate seats either. We are 11-12 votes away from convicting Trump simply based on the constitutionality vote. As someone wiser than me posted on this thread, it is possible that some Senators will not show up at all, and that dramatically changes the equation.

Wishful thinking? Yes, but so were Warnock and Ossoff winning! No guarantees, but let's try.

These dudes are getting up there in age, and I really wonder if this is what they want to be remembered for?

Over the years, I've worked with tons of Rs. Almost all of them would never support trump.
