Republican Senators will not convict Trump because they're sorry the insurrection failed

I just read an article from the New Republic of all places that ended with this paragraph:

The evidence is so overwhelming, and the stakes are so high, that there is no justifiable reason to vote for Trump’s acquittal. But many Republican senators will cast their vote to do it anyways. There will almost certainly be enough of them to ensure Trump isn’t convicted. I can’t imagine why anyone would take those senators’ rationales in good faith, given how close we came to the mass slaughter of his political opponents in the halls of Congress at Trump’s behest. And I may never be able to shake the fear that some of them secretly wish it had worked.

Before the riot, most of the Republican senators were supporting trump's desire to overturn the results of the election. After the riot, some recanted their opposition to ratifying the Electoral College votes, some did not. Now it looks like they are back on board, pledging their unquestioned fealty to Trump. I believe the author of the article was correct, except that I believe most, not just some, Republicans would prefer an authoritarian dictatorship to the democracy we have now.

They won't convict Trump, in part, because to do so would be to condemn their own personal behavior.
