The early stage discussions include former elected Republicans, former officials in the Republican administrations of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and Trump, ex-Republican ambassadors and Republican strategists.
More than 120 of them held a Zoom call last Friday to discuss the breakaway group, which would run on a platform of principled conservatism, including adherence to the Constitution and the rule of law ideas those involved say have been trashed by Trump.

(490 posts)The Trump hardcore wont deviate from anything that has his blessing - something like this will peel away Never Trump Republicans whove voted Democratic in recent cycles in greater numbers than Republicans whove stuck with the party through Trump because no elected Republican is going to leave; the face of the party will be the very same as it has been for several years now, and most Republicans have been thrilled to vote for that.
The only way a new party ends up being to their detriment is if Trump himself causes the schism.

(2,014 posts)In the shortest term, it may mean that some Repugs who voted Dem peel off again.
But in the short term it is still a benefit, as it will split the conservatives and fascists into 2 parties, splitting their vote and causing lots of internal food fights.
In the long term it may be even more valuable. If there are 2 conservative parties, we can only hope that the Bizarroland Party of Dump cultists will eventually be overtaken and keep losing, so that the cultists will once again lose their interest in politics and voting. Then we can hope that some will grow up, and the rest will stay disaffected but disempowered until that generation is a bad memory.

Ain't going to be a spin off party. By 2024 or 2028, there'll be a new faction which will overrun the MAGA's.
