40 Percent of U.S. COVID Deaths Could Have Been Averted If It Weren't for Trump: Report

A new report highlights the hundreds of thousands of unnecessary deaths in the U.S. under former President Donald Trump, noting that some 40 percent of COVID-19 pandemic deaths in 2020 would have been averted if America's mortality rate was equivalent to other wealthy peer nations.

The report—published Thursday in one of the world's oldest and best-known medical journals The Lancet—explains that even before the pandemic, the U.S. saw 461,000 unnecessary deaths in 2018 when compared to the death rates in other G7 nations (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom). Comparing the U.S. COVID-19 mortality rate to this peer group, the U.S. would have seen 40 percent fewer deaths in 2020 if its mortality rate was comparable.

"The global COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionate effect on the USA, with more than 26 million diagnosed cases and over 450000 deaths as of early February, 2021, about 40% of which could have been averted had the U.S. death rate mirrored the weighted average of the other G7 nations," the report explains.

"Many of the cases and deaths were avoidable. Instead of galvanizing the US populace to fight the pandemic, President Trump publicly dismissed its threat (despite privately acknowledging it), discouraged action as infection spread, and eschewed international cooperation," it continues.

Although I am still shocked that it was so high as 40%. The deaths were needless. It's so heartbreaking to think of all those families that are still suffering the tragedy and grief of loosing a loved one.

Trump killed them just as surely as if hed strangled them to death with his bare hands.

The US has several advantages our peer countries don't have. Population density is lower, geographically we are more isolated. Travel too and from is limited to about 10 airports. People aren't driving or taking a train from Italy or China to the US. We had 10 choke points we could have immediately implemented thorough health screenings at and made quarantines mandatory for all travelers. Would have been costly and caused some inconvenience, but I guarantee Obama, Biden or even George W Bush would have implemented strict screenings at all of the major US international airports as early as January.

Screenings would have bought us months to prepare, still would have gotten in, but the mortality rate would have been much lower.

Japan, which has one-third the population of the US and is more densely populated has less than 7000 total deaths. We suffer that in two days. 40% excess deaths sounds very conservative.

40% is extremely conservative. Could have been as high as 90%.

We could be looking at 47,000 deaths right now f not for Trump.

Know this, this is 100% true, if Hillary had been President, the Republicans would have impeached her for allowing 5,000 Americans to die of Covid. There would be weeks or months of hearings in Congress and FOX News would be running 24 hour a day human interest stories on the victims of Covid-19.
