I think it's quite possible the Senate votes by this weekend, after closing statements.
The Democrats appear uninterested in calling Witnesses, and the repubs really don't want to bother mounting much of a case, given they've already made their unmovable decision. Plus they probably don't want to give the 1 Drumpf attorney control of their case on Saturday, since the more competent one will be taking the Sabbath off.
I think if the House team thought there was any chance of moving enough repubs, they might call witnesses. Instead, I believe they just want to get the whole thing over with, and realize like most do, that they're wasting their time, and taking away from working on President Biden's agenda.

(32,017 posts)Agreed. This could be short.
Still, the case is on the record as will be the votes of all our Republican Senators. That should make a difference going forward.

(9,998 posts)Get it on the record, by all means. If for nothing else, the history books a century from now, when none of us are around.
We've been heading down this road for years. This is not going to even make a dent in our trajectory.

(24,468 posts)They have made the historical record of Trump's attempted insurrection on 1/6/21. And the Republicans will have the choice: vote their conscience to impeach or prove their Trump bona fides by voting to acquit. We will see how the voters react in future re-elections.

(9,998 posts)But speaking for myself, I will be long dead by the time the history books have any relevance.
Not to mention that history books have very little impact. We have history books now, and look at where this country is.

They have made a stunning, compelling, thorough argument. Their arguments are both factual and emotional, and intended to personally engage every Senator, all of whom were victims of Trump's crime.

(7,813 posts)are photos of Stone with oathkeepers. Campaign staff obtained the rally permit. There was a giant Jan 5 planning meeting in Trump Tower, reportedly with insurrectionists/Trump family/consultants. There must have been phone calls leading up to Jan 6 and during between Trump team and insurrectionists.
Aside from news reports and the speech which we are seeing over and over, wouldn't there normally be TONS of forensic evidence of conspiracy, participation, locations, eyewitness accounts, etc? Who were Stone, Miller, Bannon, and Don Jr talking to the last couple of months?
Are they saving all that for criminal trials and letting the gop 'no' votes on conviction look horrible in hindsight? Or does the House team just not have time and resources to gather/present all the info in a credible manner?

Trump is the priority in the Impeachment.

(1,384 posts)trump's lawyer, Schoen is an Orthodox Jew & requested & granted a postponement if the trial ran into Shabbat. Monday is President's day, plus the senate had planned a recess for the week of President's day.

(9,998 posts)Perhaps that is the goal, and why the lawyer just told them to go ahead with Saturday, and he wouldn't be there.
My guess is that Saturday is spent with the House Managers giving their closing. Then they break until Sunday, the other side closes, and there's a vote.
57-43 is my top margin, best realistic scenario.
