Trump and Pence 'yet to repair their relationship' after president turned on key ally over election

(Independent UK) Former US president Donald Trump has reportedly still not healed the rift with his once-loyal deputy Mike Pence, which erupted over the latter's refusal to support his boss’s baseless election fraud claims and the Capitol riot on 6 January.

The mob that broke through police barricades to storm the legislative complex that day had been fired up by remarks made by Mr Trump and his inner circle at a “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington, DC, insisting his election defeat to Joe Biden was the result of a mass voter fraud conspiracy his legal team failed to prove.

....(snip)....

As it became clear on 6 January that the vice president had no intention of attempting to overturn the result, chants of “Hang Mike Pence!” were heard to ring out across the National Mall among aggrieved supporters of the president, with armed members of far-right groups like the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers as well as QAnon believers among their number.

....(snip)....

The pair “discussed everything” concerning the events of 6 January during their final two weeks in office, the source said.

“He got his point across at the meeting afterward,” the aide said of Mr Pence, suggesting there were still hard feelings lingering between the two men, with Mr Trump refusing to say sorry. .............(more)

The Trump wing of the Republican party hates him and will never vote for him.

Pence is going to be remembered as an enabler to a monster. But I do think he worked against Trump's most extreme ideas behind the scenes. There are stories that he was always at the White House in meetings he wasn't even invited to to try to keep Trump's most disturbing ideas in check. But in the end he enabled so many horrible things and didn't even have the courage to speak out against the man who tried to have him killed. He could have been remembered as someone who was a hero behind the scenes in an unfortunate situation, but instead he'll be remembered as a spineless coward.

constitution. He voted for the peaceful transfer of power, and he had to know it was the end of his political career...I doubt he expected the attempt on his life by Trump. Pence will be gray in terms of history...with a positive note of 'in the end, he supported the constitution' and stopped Trump.

Doesn't Pence realize he's hurting Republican unity by his obsessive focus on how close he came to being lynched on January 6? Let it go, fer crissakes.

I remember a Pogo comic from back in the day. Pogo and Albert are talking about strife and conflict, and how much better life could be if everyone could just get along. Invoking the "lion laying down with the lamb" imagery of the Peaceable Kingdom, Pogo notes that the lions are okay with inviting a quick meal into their dens, but the lambs would like some more concrete guarantees that they won't be eaten. Albert cuts to the chase and concludes that it's all the lambs' fault that we can't all live together in peace.

As in "Sorry, I tried to incite them to hang you when I found out you were running for your life ..." ?

What self respecting person would accept an apology under those circumstances?

If Pence had a shred of brains or integrity, he would be joining the impeachment managers and supporting their case on every news channel. At the very least he would be turning on Dump, and assisting with this 3rd party push. But no, he’s happy to end his political career, and slink away to a fat paycheck on Repug Welfare, with some vain hope that this will all be forgotten and he will someday be able to show his face.
