I have lost count of how many of this massive vehicles involved accidents just this year. There was freezing rain and black ice at the time of the accident early this morning. 6 people died, plus many injuries were reported. I watched some of the videos from onlookers and the aerial views which were disturbing. I have been lucky enough not to be involved in any of these types of accident. People need to slow down. I get that weather can change in a matter of a few seconds. You have to be consciously careful and be ready for anything. The faster you go, the harder it is to slow down. Be safe and be aware!

Stay home.
Don't walk on it either or you will end up in the ER with a broken bone.

(137 posts)It worked in most place, but add speed, people not watching for/or experienced with black ice and foggy drizzle and it made for a sad and horrible accident.
My husband passed through that section I-35 an hour before that accident happened on his way to work. The drizzle had just started to get worse and stick to the road at that time. Thankfully he called me to let me know he was safe before the accident was announced on the news.

(24,467 posts)On sub-freezing days, a road that looks wet, could be an unreal skating rink. I know, I've experienced a couple of 720+ degree carousels in my life....

(29,658 posts)in the rear........ I try to keep at least 4 car lengths between me and the car in front of me AT ALL TIMES. Just hate tho how people will pass me then cut in front of me so I have to back, back, back, back up to keep that 4 car lengths space. Always so afraid some dope will crash into me because they forgot the 3 - 4 car length rule. I know 3 - 4 c@r lengths is NOT always possible in some parts of the country, it damn I try my hardest to keep my distance here in Southeastern MN. Should add, if I can I stay home when weather is bad......Im retired.

(13,787 posts)I do the same when driving my semi truck, keeping 4 to 6 truck lengths between me and the vehicles ahead of me and is on dry roads!

(14,124 posts)It was foggy, and there was a wide load coming across a narrow bridge. The local sheriff decided in his infinite wisdom to stop traffic just over a hill, not at the top of the hill. I had previously passed a semi and remembered that it was still behind me, so I turned on my caution lights. Thankfully I did so, because he came barreling over the top of the hill even in the fog. He was able to drive into the ditch, narrowly missing me by about 10 inches or so. All I could do was watch it happen in my rearview mirror. Needless to say, I was a bit shaky for a while. Once I was able to put my car in gear, I turned it around and drove away. If I didn't do that, I may have slapped the driver!

(15,937 posts)This is why I do not drive in these conditions. People don't have the awareness to drive like their lives depend on it.
TRAGIC!!!

(192 posts)You had to pay special attention even on good days. Way too much traffic way too fast.
Staying home is a good and safe plan!
I'm hurting for all the people who's lives were irreparably changed or ended today.

(15,937 posts)This wouldn't have happened if TxDOT just made ALL the lanes FREE when they were doing construction, this would probably not have happened quite like this. The additional barricades makes for unsafe travel. I found it strange that over 100 cars were using the Express lanes so early in the morning.
Also that portion of I-35W is above ground over about proximately a couple of miles.
FYI: Rep. Romero replaced long term Lon Burnam who is a really interesting.
Texas State Rep. Ramon Romero Jr. Says Hes Investigating Cause Of Deadly I-35W Pileup: Who Dropped The Ball And Why?
Romero said on Twitter that he has heard reports the roadway where the pileup happened allegedly wasnt salted or sanded ahead of the icy conditions. He went on to say more about an investigation in the Twitter thread.
My office is asking many questions and demanding answers. We have already had multiple discussions about this tollways bottleneck design and lack of commonsense safety measures such as a shoulder
Who was responsible for safety on this roadway? Who was responsible for deicing this portion of our highway? Who dropped the ball and why? Does TxDOT oversee safety measures on tollways or do we just trust these private companies to handle it?
Every resident of Fort Worth has known this weather was coming for days, yet nothing was done, and far too many people have lost their lives as a result. We will not rest until we get answers. Incredible gratitude to @fortworthpd and @FortWorthFire.
This tragedy deserves an immediate and thorough investigation. This inclement weather was foreseeable and lives were lost because a private company didnt uphold its end of the deal. Investigate now @TXAG @TxDOT @TxDPS.
North Tarrant Express told CBS 11 News that they had pre-treated the area on Tuesday.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area of I-35W just north of downtown Fort Worth as cleanup is expected to last most of the day.

(14,124 posts)She is very good at driving in bad weather, but when it gets icy or snowy in the Austin area she will not drive at all.

(8,090 posts)Yep, people need to slow down and leave adequate distance between vehicles. And non-essentials need to stay off the roads any time "ice" is mentioned! Essentials are probably getting all sorts of weather notices from their employers (like the healthcare system I work for) and need to plan as much as possible. Six lives lost and God knows the severity of the injuries, so sad.
