The Proud Boys are having a rough time. The self-described "Western chauvinist" drinking club has long been a refuge for white supremacists, anti-Semites and assorted extremists seeking a veneer of legitimacy.

But in the wake of the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol last month, the groupis in some disarray, as state chapters disavow the group's chairman and leaders bicker inpublic and in private about what direction to take the Proud Boys in.

Proud Boys chairman Henry Tarrio, who goes by Enrique, was arrested days before the Capitol riot and charged with two federal weapons charges. Three weeks later, Tarrio was outed as a longtime FBI informant,a role he has now admitted to. The news about the Proud Boys leader came as other members of the group were arrested for their involvement in the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Then, on Feb. 3, Canada designated the Proud Boys as a domestic terrorist group.

3. I think Tarrio's place in the group is no longer needed. I think they used him as a way to say, hey,

this is not a racist group. The veil has been lifted. They can no longer walk back the fact that they are a white terrorist group. Having a black klansman doesn't change that. The disarray was happening before the insurrection. Now that he has been outed as an informant, they will probably get rid of him. KARMA is a you know what.

I'd like to piggyback on what you have written.

I belonged to a veterans club when I moved to town (transferred my membership) that I found to be extremely racist and bigoted. But they had one person of color that they welcomed without much chagrin. When he was in there, no racist overtones were present. He was their token, their "quota", their "see we're not racist" cover guy.

It sickened me to see this. After he moved away it was like open season for the racists and I finally had enough and didn't renew my membership and let it lapse after many, many years in the National organization.

is that the states in the South, having seceded on the grounds of "states' rights" could not work together well enough to stave off the North.

It's the same reason the whole US experiment basically failed in infancy prior to the adoption of the Constitution. The states could not work together well enough to establish a national identity. Even after that, the nation was still so loosely coupled that it fell apart in 1860 and was barely stitched back together in the Civil War era.

There has always been a faction of the American populace that can't abide with having a National government, and their loyalties cannot expand beyond their own local and state entities.

It's why, in most cases, revolutions result not in democratic states, but in authoritarian states. Breeding chaos invites strongmen to come in and take over, and typically those types won't brook and power sharing, especially with some group of legislators. The one true miracle of our story happened when Washington stepped down after his second term. Hell, many of our founding fathers wanted him to be king. Anarchists and nihilists can't work together unless they have a strong leader who can harness their rage and resentments.

These so-called militias groups are nothing more than gangs, fighting for their turf.
