Bolshevism was aided by many factors. Confusion, inept government, WWI. They saw a path to power and pushed moderates, the existing government, moderate parts of the military, aside. But there's always the issue of Lenin, passing entirely through the theater of war, on a diplomatically sealed train. There was a book popular in the 20th century, "To the Finland Station".

Bolshevism of course an insurrection from the left, the storming of the Palace. Jan 6 was an insurrection from the fascist right. And there is the issue in 1917, of Bolshevism being a 'proletarian' rebellion led by elites. Leaders in the Soviet Union did not live a proletarian lifestyle. They had limos, and dachas, caviar and vodka, and maintained ties to western elites in banking and oil to keep their government afloat.
