It was a gloomy Tuesday, January 12, and we were back on Kiawah Island, back in that same elegant country club. This time the room was darker. The Christmas tree was gone and so was the smile on Haley’s lips...

“He’s not going to run for federal office again,” Haley said.

But what if he does? Or at least, what if he spends the next four years threatening to? Can the Republican Party heal with Trump in the picture?

“I don’t think he’s going to be in the picture,” she said, matter-of-factly. “I don’t think he can. He’s fallen so far.”

This was the most certainty I’d heard from any Republican in the aftermath of January 6. And Haley wasn’t done.

“We need to acknowledge he let us down,” she said. “He went down a path he shouldn’t have, and we shouldn’t have followed him, and we shouldn’t have listened to him. And we can’t let that ever happen again.”

4. She did listen to and follow Trump for years. She worked for Trump. She was all in until now.

They are deliberately obfuscating this story, which is now completely repudiated by Haley herself.

I'm puzzled by some of the posts I'm seeing on other threads, where people seem to be getting sidetracked on what I think are irrelevancies. The main point, the bottom line:

Nothing helps us more right now than a Civil War within the Republican Party.

I can't understand why anyone in the Democratic Party would ever, for an instant, think of interfering with that dynamic, discouraging that possibility, or have a problem with that.

8. I didn't so much mean posts on this thread or this story in particular.

I should have clarified that better in my post.

The thing about this Nikki Haley story is that in spite of where Haley is today, it was the lead story on CNN this morning.

I'll bet Trump is really not happy about that.

It's just an opinion, but I think anything that feeds Trump's growing insecurity is a really good thing. The way he is behaving, summoning GOPers to Mar-a-Lago, overreacting to minor slights, are signs that he is aware his power is disintegrating, in spite of what some experts are saying on CNN and MSNBC.

I take your point, though.

There are a lot of right-wingers there. Haley has quickly been labeled a "RINO," like sooooo many of the others who have called out Trump for his failures and idiocy. It's absolutely astounding how much of an iron grip Trump has on his cult. They won't forsake him no matter who points out his fatal flaws and wretched character.
