46. Major is a recent "rescue pup" - about 2 or 3. Champ is quite old - maybe 12+.

I'm a devout dog lover. Let me tell you, when you're beloved besties hit the 10+ year mark, you begin to start the horrific realization that you're going to have to let them "go". I've been decimated at every junction, and one doesn't ever get over it. Joe Biden's had to deal with so much loss, I can't imagine how he manages -- but then it hits me, we all do and we have no choice -- ever.

German Shepherds (and other large breed dogs) age very dramatically after about 8 - 10 years. It's not uncommon for these dogs to die beginning at the age of about 9+ years old, and they have significant health issues along the way over that age. It's a heart breaker. People need to think about that when they set their hearts on large breed dogs. But it's impossible because we love what we love. (But I'm an equal dog lover - I loves 'em large or small.
