It's also an exercise in futility. We simply do not know, and many individual RepubliQan Senators will not reveal how they will vote until they vote.
Trump will either be convicted or he will not. We will not know until the Senate has voted.
We all hope that at least 17 GQP Senators will vote to convict. There may be that many who will pull up their big kid Underoos and vote to convict. Or not. They're all doing the math right now.
What happens if they vote to convict? Will that cost them the next election? Do they fear for their lives if they vote to convict? What are their constituents saying?
Those are the questions they are asking themselves. They are not asking themselves whether Trump is guilty of incitement to insurrection. They all know the answer to that question. Their votes will be purely political and related to their ambitions to continue to be Senators.
We will know the answer quite soon.
In the end, it will not matter in terms of the survival of our system of government. A new administration is in place, and Democrats have control of both houses of Congress. Barely, in the case of the Senate, but the control is there. The nation will muddle through until the next election. It is then when we must strive to increase those majorities. If we can do that, we will save the nation. We must do that.
So, speculate all you wish, but realize that we will have an answer very soon. Then we will know, and only then.

(146,286 posts)whether the Senate will vote to convict Trump. The affect on the general population and on voters is another matter, entirely.
