Another supplement claim goes poof...

It's no wonder the supplement makers and sellers really hate actual science.

Vitamin C, zinc don't lessen COVID-19 symptoms, study finds

Can vitamin C and zinc help you fight off COVID-19?

No, not even at high doses, according to the first randomized clinical trial to test the two supplements under medical supervision.

Despite the popular use of vitamin C and zinc to fight off or lessen the severity of viral colds and flu, the new study, published Friday in JAMA Network Open, found the two supplements were of no benefit to people isolating at home with COVID-19.

In fact, the findings were so unimpressive that the study was stopped early.

"Unfortunately, these 2 supplements failed to live up to their hype," wrote Dr. Erin Michos of John Hopkins and Houston Methodist's Dr. Miguel Cainzos-Achirica, in an accompanying editorial.

I happen to take both, but for other reasons.

I think they might find these two do something, but that's my hunch and perhaps wishful thinking.

I'm fairly healthy for my 61 years, and I've never used supplements regularly.

In fact, I read somewhere that most of the vitamins in supplements just go down the toilet.
(As in the human body peeing them out.)

That said, this study and others like it can not possibly tease out what would be a minimal effect at best and dependant on so many other issues, like general diet, general health, other concomitant chronic health or digestive/absorption issues, and likely synergistic effects of other nutrients.

Not surprised at the results of this study since they are grotesquely naive' in their objectives. Might these or other nutrients/supplements aid general immune function in SOME populations--either directly or from reducing other health factors, including blood glucose spikes, absorption of other nutrients or specific cellular functions? Possibly. But studies such as this could never tease that out. What will be beneficial is large cohorts such as Framingham followed for decades to specifically look at predictors of immune function/dysfunction.

That said, there are many reasons to ensure one gets sufficient vitamin D, Zinc, Vitamin C and sleep (whether unaided or via melatonin "assist." ). Is it a COVID-19 or any other infectious disease "cure?" Of course not. Might it aid routine health and immune function? Possibly so and likely in some people. But, as always food sources and a balanced diet are the best primary source.

From the JAMA article:

Objective: To examine whether high-dose zinc and/or high-dose ascorbic acid reduce the severity or duration of symptoms compared with usual care among ambulatory patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

So I'm still taking my one-a-day multivitamin...

8. Zinc is about prevention of virus infection proven to work in vitro

Zinc is chemically prevented from entering the cell (where the virus lives and does it’s damage) by an outer lipid layer and therefore is not effective for treatment.

In vitro zinc does kill virus including the corona virus. When the oral cavity is bathed in zinc, just as in the petri dish the zinc does kill the virus

That's pretty funny.

Linus Pauling was suggesting a gram an hour during waking time.

So 18 grams a day would be mega not 2..

peeps who take a complex of supplements.

Or maybe a couple different complexes -

Like mine would include D, C, a little zinc, elderberry, a general multi, and some other things. Garlic sometimes. Selenium sometimes. Copper sometimes.
