"Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are," Trump said, according to lawmakers who were briefed on the call afterward by McCarthy.
McCarthy insisted that the rioters were Trump's supporters and begged Trump to call them off.
Trump's comment set off what Republican lawmakers familiar with the call described as a shouting match between the two men. A furious McCarthy told the President the rioters were breaking into his office through the windows, and asked Trump, "Who the f--k do you think you are talking to?" according to a Republican lawmaker familiar with the call.

(32,017 posts)The Senate is not required to follow traditional, judicial branch evidence rules. The Senate can admit any evidence it wants. For me, the issue is timing. This evidence may not get into the record because it was discovered so late. Still, it could get in. It just needs to be on record before the final vote.

(43,307 posts)There's no need to verify its accuracy at the point of rebuttal. The true source will come out later, and there will be no fight McCarthy can put up about it, because he knows it's been recorded by a three-letter agency.

(15,359 posts)been if Trump had gotten away with it, and it was pretty much how he'd been looking at them all along.
That was maybe why the Supreme Court couldn't have been counted on to save his ass. I'd say Thomas and Justice Hand Maid would have just blindly obeyed, but no one else. Even Kavanaugh would have known better. If they did that, they wouldn't be a Supreme Court anymore. Trump would have ended up with a House and Senate under his control. He would be able to have any justice impeached and removed, if they even bothered to go through the motions. He could decree he had the power and just do it as emperor.

(169,860 posts)although it might get batted aside "hearsay".
What will happen after the vote is that all of this has to be taken "to the court of public opinion", although it will end up competing with the COVID relief efforts and other economic policy matters.
However it should be packaged for EVERY STATE so that the state party heads can use it to tie these loons to the GOP members running in their states and force them to take a stand.

StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)Dereliction of duty is an essential element of the insurrection article.
And a second article wouldn't have made a difference at all - except to give people something else to criticize ("The dereliction of duty charge wasn't necessary and just confused and distracted. They should have just charged him with one thing".)

(169,860 posts)I remember the news reports as the Capitol invasion was going on (I was watching CSPAN and listening to my local CBS affiliate news radio station) and the commentators were indicating that multiple people were trying to get a hold of 45 and eventually, it was reported, the "only" one who supposedly made contact was McCarthy. Supposedly people were even trying to get his kids to intervene.
At this point, the fodder needs to be banked for election time - and not just 2022, but literally for THIS year for any states that might have state legislative seats up. They need to define the GOP as supporters of insurrection.

The more I think about Trumps quote here, the more revelatory it is that Trump truly viewed the attack as a way to physically terrorize Congress into overturning the election. Thats exactly why he didnt call them off.

Wow.
"Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are," Trump said to Kevin McCarthy, sources tell CNN.
Rioters were breaking through windows into McCarthy's office.
