Biden considering prominent Republicans for ambassadorships

Biden administration officials are weighing nominating prominent Republicans to ambassadorships — including Cindy McCain and former Republican Sen. Jeff Flake — to highlight the importance of bipartisanship in U.S. foreign policy, according to people familiar with their thoughts.

Why it matters: President Biden hasn't put any Republicans in his Cabinet, but a move like this would symbolize a return to the Truman-era adage that partisan politics stops "at the water's edge."

It also would signal to other nations the Trump era is over, and Biden speaks for all Americans, not just Democrats.

In addition, the potential nominations of two Arizona Republicans who clashed with former President Trump and endorsed Biden could boost Democrats, signaling a big-tent approach in a once-red state the new president won by some 10,000 votes.

I think Biden should make Susan Collins an ambassador.

That's not just Democrats. He's appealing to everyone but the hard-core Trump supporters, as intended.

Putting someone like Jeff Flake in an ambassador position would be seen as bipartisan, and it's harmless. It's not like he's appointing him Chief of Staff.

Since they would have supported Trump's positions, just like Jeff Flake used to. Arizona is turning blue, and it's AZ Democrats who deserve credit for Biden's win in AZ.

Especially when Trump launched his attacks on him. I don't think Flake has much sway with the GOP these days.

At least when it comes to the UK they are an ally so there is not much harm Cindy McCain can do there. Not sure about South Africa but Flake should stay retired in his nice home.

Apparently, according to my husband, Toomey is an Irish name since he’s retiring anyway, make Toomey ambassador to Ireland and then governor PA,who is a democrat, can name a democrat to his seat.

All of a sudden he’s become reasonable. Either because he’s not running for re-election so he doesn’t care anymore or he wants something. But I’d definitely trade Ambassador Toomey for Senator Fetterman. Maybe Fetterman is the reason Toomey is bailing, because he knew he would lose to Fetterman.

I suggest they be shut out.

Can't trust any of those sociopaths. They always abuse power. So deny it to them.

Make DC and Puerto Rico states so rethugs are shut out of power for a long enough time to repair the damage republicans and the rich pigs funding them have done to this country.

Republicans want to screw over the non rich people and destroy the government.
They've been doing that for decades . Time to stop thier bull shit and root it out from the system.

It could take a long time and Dems need that time to undo the damage and republicans do that damage whenever they get power.

They are like rats chewing away human rights and the consitution and foundation of our democracy.

Bipartisanship cannot happen with sociopaths ,period.

Throw the vermin to the curb.

I appreciate they have shared goals as regards foreign policy. As a Country, we all should be pretty much be on the same page. I don't see either as promoting wars based on phony trumped up charges like WMD's with Mushroom Clouds and such.

I think Cindy McCain and Jeff Flake could be trusted to represent Biden's Foreign Policy agenda generally sans corruption. I don't see either as Corrupt or intending to sell out our interests to hostile entities.
