It was always going to end in a car crash of fascist cray cray. How Senate republicans think that clinging to the fetid carcus of the bloviating wannabee totalitarian blowhard of dubious lineage and limited shelf life, is a long term strategy to retain power is beyond me. They let the far right in to sit at their table and now they are reduced to begging for crumbs from them by letting Trump off his treasonous hook. Do they not realise that those they answer too in their states are not terribly representative of the population as a whole? That the state party level machine got taken over by the baggers a decade ago and that batshit crazy has been brewing a potent mix of delusion and hatred for the last ten years, which is now at boiling point.
By pandering to this swamp of nationalist, white supremacy, insurrectionist base of awfulness they risk locking themselves out of power for the next decade.
Good.

That was the first lie they told.
The election was rigged. It was a fraud. We won by the largest landslide in history.
That was the last lie they told.
Lies obviously have consequences.

(833 posts)Repug victories don't depend on bright red districts and states. They depend on purple swing districts, and this spectacle will turn those people off for a long time. So the question is not just what fringe groups control the repugs; it's also what can the repug party control, going forward.
I think that, following this debacle, repugs will have to find a way to divorce themselves from radical elements and from dump. Otherwise, they'll circle the drain with dross like Don Jr., Hawley, Haley, or some other far-right winger and insurrectionist. To find their way back to a position centrist enough to appeal to swing voters, they have to find candidates who are free of all this stink.

(1,910 posts)The military didn't go along with Trump. Much of the ranks are minorities. Hitler had military background and was able to use that system to gain control of the military.
Totally different system here. The civilian lackeys Trump installed had zero chance of corrupting career military guys. Also German military was all white and of like mind, our military is very diverse and there is no way to get a military that is 40% minorities to do what they did in Germany.

Our military will be harder to convert, though, so we have that going for us.

(12,319 posts)There are definitely comparisons to the rise of fascism in Europe and acknowledging that helps protect us from tyrants. Even Jon Meacham acknowledged the similarities and he is not inclined to be an alarmist.

(1,357 posts)how they think acquitting an obviously guilty scumbag is going to keep them in power? trump is a corrupt and soulless excuse for a human, and when he ran in an election, even previously red states turned blue to keep him out. Not that any republicans changed their minds about him, they voted for him, but those who saw the depravity got to the polls and made sure he would be out of our government. So what is their thinking that this won't happen to them? Do they think we will forget when they come up for re-election? They are worried about alienating and losing trump's base, but that base is a minority at the polls, as shown by the election. Maybe they should be FAR more worried about alienating anyone on the fence when it's election day. They are tipping everyone against them.
