General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsTell me where I am wrong with this? Trump wanted even more bloodshed and death on 1/6/21 ....
... and that might have even included the murders of Speaker Pelosi and Vice president Pence so he could declare
martial law to keep power.
This was an attempt at a violent overthrow of the US Government by Donald J Trump.
Trump and others (Bannon, Flynn, Stephen Miller, Stone, Fox news and so on)
Helped to organize the riot.
Helped to pay for the riot.
Helped to incite the riot.
Decapitated the D.C. National Guard and local law enforcement so they could not respond to the riot.
And Trump refused to call off the rioters who were loyal to him when told of their violence and law breaking.
So the only thing that Senate Republicans can do when confronted by this proven evidence is
to acquit Trump.

(44,996 posts)He may have been hoping for a magat martyr massacre on the Capitol steps. Can you imagine if the police had opened fire? He was looking for any excuse to declare martial law and suspend government. Thank goodness he failed - no matter what the actual intention.

that a good % of those idiots had warrants and or something on them that would have
allowed the police to hold 'em.
But
Two days before the Pro Trump riot/coup Trump's acting Defense Sec. gave a stand down
order to the D.C. National Guard. Trump installed a new acting head of the DoD right after he lost
the election. It was all premeditated.
This memorandum responds directly to your January 4, 2021 memorandum regarding the District of Columbia request for District of Columbia National Guard (DCNG) support in response to planned demonstrations from January 5-6, 2021. You are authorized to approve the requested support, subject to my guidance below and subject to consultation with the Attorney General, as required by Executive Order 11485.
Without my subsequent, personal authorization, the DCNG is not authorized the following:
* To be issued weapons, ammunition, bayonets, batons, riot control agents or ballistic protection equipment such as helmets and body armor.
* To interact physically with protesters, except when necessary in self-defense or defense of others.
* Prohibited from sharing equipment with law enforcement agencies or seeking support from any non-DC National Guard units.
* Forbidden from conducting searches, seizures, arrests, or other similar direct law enforcement activity.
* Forbidden from using Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance assets or to conduct Incident, Awareness and Assessment activities.
* No helicopters or any other air assets.

(933 posts)Instead, they stopped short inn some cases of serving tea. The cops just pulled open the barriers themselves. I get they were outnumbered, but there was sufficient notice from the s pools to deal with it.
The event reminded me of the time the guards of the Tower of London just stood aside or participated in that insurrection. I couldnt get away from that memory.

(18,964 posts)the mechanisms by which the guard could be ordered into action. He had his brother instructed in the process present to throw a wrench into the machinery to keep the guard from being deployed.
Another actor in this insurrection play was Roger Stone. Remember he created the slogan "Stop the Steal" and pushed all the buttons to make sure there were banners, flags, posters, billboards etc available to amplify the slogan and make it appear to be a much larger movement than it actually was.
Supreme Court Justice Thomas' wife, Jenny(?) bought airline tickets and paid otherwise for protesters to travel to the rally.
This was organized down to the finest details and it was the old Trump gang that did it.
I would hope that there will be criminal charges filed independent of this farce so that we can litigate the TRUE charge:

(31,893 posts)That is an untrue rumor:
Following the melee, journalists and activists have scrutinized the roles of various individuals involved in the promotion of demonstrations that day. On Jan. 7, 2021, Slate reporter Mark Joseph Stern highlighted the fact that the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Ginni, had enthusiastically promoted the protests and praised the participants:
By the weekend, this observation had formed the basis of a false rumor that Thomas not only supported the protesters as shown on Facebook, but that she funded 80 buses to transport insurrectionists to D.C. on Wednesday.
The rumor stems from the unproven assertion made by Talking Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who claimed on Twitter two days before the riots (before deleting the tweet after they turned violent) that he and his organizations both Turning Point USA and Turning Point Action USA would be sending 80+ buses full of patriots to DC to fight for this president. The link to Thomas gained prominence online when it was promoted virally in a user-submitted blog post on the left-wing site DailyKos. That posts argument stems from tweets tying Thomas to Turning Point USA and other right-wing political organizations involved in the rally.
While we point out that Kirk, no stranger to false claims, has provided no evidence of his organizations funding of 80 buses to the rally, the link to Thomas based on her work with Turning Point USA is out-of-date even if Kirk is telling the truth. It is true that Thomas was once on the Advisory Council for Turning Point USA, a body that has at times included over 75 people, but she has not served in that role since at least early 2019, according to Turning Point USAs website.
Thomas is indeed a well-known right-wing organizer and conspiracy theorist. She provided Trump with several memos outlining what she believed to be government officials unfaithful to Trump, lobbied successfully for appointments of Trump loyalists to government posts, and along with other activists met with him in 2019 to discuss appointments that they accused the presidents aides of blocking, for example. In 2016 as Snopes reported in an October 2020 investigation, she was also part of efforts to promote false talking points regarding illegal voting by immigrants in the 2016 election.
However, as Stern, the Slate reporter, tweeted: even if [Turning Point USA] funded transportation to the insurrection (and we should not automatically believe Charlie Kirk), Thomas had nothing to do with it. As such, the claim that Ginni Thomas organized 80 buses for the Save America Rally is false.

scarletwoman
(31,893 posts)The video of trump et al was from backstage BEFORE trump's speech. What they were looking at on the monitors in the tent was the crowd that was there for the rally on the ellipse - this way before trump and the others started their speeches, and way before trump told the rally-goers to march to the Capitol.
Trump was back in the White House when the invasion started.

At that time, what I thought I heard the commentators saying was that Trump and his people appeared to be celebrating (the invasion). In my mind, in that context, they were. That's why I asked the question. It was not my intent to spread misinfo. Either I misheard, misunderstood or the commentators mis-spoke. Probably the second. My bad.

(17,515 posts)If you believe that Trump was instrumental in the planning and execution of the raid, you have to be able to imagine what he thought that the end game looked like. The only possible way for the coup to succeed is if Congressmen or women were murdered, the raid was blamed on Antifa, and Trump had to take over to stop the violence. It was his Reichstag Fire. Trump was perfectly willing to sacrifice both lawmakers and seditionists in his goal to remain in power. He is a ruthless, evil bastard and the people who will vote to acquit him are cut from the same cloth. They know.

(47,351 posts)The way he was watching the insurrection enthusiastically on TV indicaed to me that he was thinking that everything was going as planned, maybe even better. Plus the way he started firing people at the Pentagon and replacing them with Trump loyalists was a classic coup maneuver.
This has been done over and over again throughout history, he was just following old playbooks.

Imho, if they acquit then the coup is still ongoing. Just in a more subtle way than on January 6th.
January 6th is right up there with December 7th, in my book. Not in the amount of deaths that occurred but in the sense of an attack on our country.
If the republicans acquit........they are endorsing what happened.

(70,476 posts)ATTN Senators on Trump's guilt before the insurrection/riot. You want proof? Here you go.
Dec. 19: Trump tweeted his praise for a report by his adviser Peter Navarro alleging election fraud: "A great report by Peter. Statistically impossible to have lost the 2020 Election. Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!"
Dec. 26: Trump tweeted: "The Justice Department and the FBI have done nothing about the 2020 Presidential Election Voter Fraud, the biggest SCAM in our nations history, despite overwhelming evidence. They should be ashamed. History will remember. Never give up. See everyone in D.C. on January 6th."
Dec. 27: "See you in Washington, DC, on January 6th. Dont miss it. Information to follow!" Trump tweeted.
Jan. 1: "The BIG Protest Rally in Washington, D.C., will take place at 11.00 A.M. on January 6th. Locational details to follow. StopTheSteal!" Trump tweeted.
Jan. 1: "January 6th. See you in D.C." Trump tweeted.
Jan. 3: Trump retweeted @JenLawrence21, an organizer of a March for Trump bus tour: "Now we will bring it to DC on Jan 6 and PROUDLY stand beside you!"
