This trial has been more eye opening than I thought it could be. This trial showed just how close the crowed was to not only senators but Representatives as well. This wasn't a mob running rampant. "Leaders" of the mob knew exactly where to go. An investigation needs to be done about the supposed Tours that happened in the days before the riot. We also need to ask had maps been made or given to people in the mob so they knew where to go. Just how did these people get this closes to members of congress and their staff ?
Pence:
How does Pence dare run for any type of office after this Trial. We are finding information out that no doubt Secret Service and FBI had to know hours and the Day after the event. I cannot believe Pence wasn't told this information. Knowing even what just happened to himself should have been all the evidence Pence needed to enact the 25th Amendment. To not have done it knowing all the information we do now makes it not only a coward's move to let Trump remain even the figure head of power but shows Pence can't lead.
Hawley, Cruz, McCarthy Boebert, Taylor Green and the rest.
More and more information is coming out that several members of congress had some sort of role in Jan 6th events. They need to be held accountable for their actions and deeds.
Rest of GOP:
After all this evidence If the GOP Senators do not vote to impeach they are basically approving the mob actions and if they are approving of this action. What happens the next time this is tried --because if Trump is not held accountable for Jan 6th it is only a matter of time before another mob is encourage to do this again. The Vast of the American people know this and to give power to the "Base" like this is giving into Terrorist.
Finally If the GOP do not stand up for Democracy this will in fact harm The United States in World Standing. How can we dare condemn coups in the future when we let the Leader of the American attempted coup go unpunished.

(1,114 posts)I honestly believe Putin and his ban of Hackers dug up dirt on a lot of party members and gave it to Trump to use as leverage.

(5 posts)I think a lot of the Republican Senators are facing a dilemma. Do the vote their conscience or their career?
From what we've seen in the last few years, I think most will vote to protect their careers. They were elected by a voters who believe the most bizarre things and expect their Senators to support those beliefs.

(86,593 posts)This power thing is about a minority gaining the power to abuse others with impunity so they can reassure themselves that they are superior in some way. The rest of us have to believe in it or suffer.

(14,564 posts)You are going to have three groups of R senators.
1) The ones who do vote to convict.
2) The ones you note that that have SOME light in their souls and might vote to convict but for their fear retribution by the beast they helped to create.
3) The ones who are so high on their their own bullshit they have come to believe they are great christian patriots who are on a holy battle against the evil liberal boogyman, and anything they do and say is justified.
Group three is is many times over the size of groups 1 & 2 combined.

(25,471 posts)I'd have to disagree. If Pence really was the one who called in the National Guard and was the one running the show for at least the last two weeks (and probably longer) of the administration, he showed more leadership ability than almost every Republican in Congress, including several who think they're going to run in 2024.
That's an incredibly low bar, of course, but Pence showed more leadership ability in four hours on January 6th than Trump, Cruz, Hawley, and dozens of others have shown in four years.
"all the evidence Pence needed to enact the 25th Amendment"
He needed Trump's recently-installed lackeys to enact it, which they were never going to do. Not sure why we keep ignoring that.
I find it curious that much of the blame for Trump and his lackeys has seemingly shifted to Pence. In my opinion, the former deserves all of it.
"If the GOP do not stand up for Democracy this will in fact harm The United States in World Standing"
No, it won't. The entire world (except for a few wishful-thinkers) has known from the beginning that the GOP will acquit him, and we're already at an all-time low because of Trump's actions and inaction of the past four years. Our standing is already beginning to recover, thanks to Biden. Just getting elected improved that and his connections from when he was VP will accelerate the recovery.
To nearly everyone, the outcome of the trail was predestined and it changes nothing. For some reason, many of us on the left consider conviction some kind of magic wand that will make everything all sunshine and roses, but it was never going to be that.

(1,114 posts)25th it would have been a clear message to the world the U.S. will not tolerate coups of any type. It also would have proven Democracy is more important than Tribal politics.
