Trump lawyers warn calling witnesses will turn impeachment trial 'real ugly, real quick': report

On Saturday, POLITICO's Kyle Cheney reported that a member of former President Donald Trump's legal team is warning that if House impeachment managers decide to call witnesses in the trial, things will get "real ugly, real quick."

In particular, warned the source, Senate Republicans would retaliate by trying to call House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, and trying to pin the blame on them for the late arrival of the National Guard to control the invasion of the U.S. Capitol — even though reports show it was Trump himself who resisted sending in the Guard.

As Cheney noted, this strategy would likely fail because either side's submission of witnesses requires a majority vote in the Senate, and therefore the Democratic majority would have a check on who is permitted to give testimony.

So far, only a handful of senators have suggested they want to hear witness testimony in the trial. If impeachment managers decide not to call witnesses, the final vote on Trump's guilt in the Capitol riot could be held today.
