So on one hand, McConnell says Trump must be held responsible...

...for crimes committed while in office after Trump leaves office.
But on the other hand, since impeachment is a tool primarily for removal, we lack the jurisdiction to hold the president responsible.

This is a republican catch 22, in that this double speak would never fly for a democrat.

The available punishment options don't fit the crimes. The only way for him to face anything commensurate to what he's done is prosecution. That was always going to be the case.

That being said, McConnell is just trying to shirk responsibility.
