I watched the Nixon impeachment hearings in my high school social studies class.

It was impressed on us that this was a very important and rare event in American history. We talked about it in school and we talked about it at home. My parents hated Nixon, and they believed in government's ability to deal with his crimes. It turns out Nixon had a conscience and did the right thing by resigning.

The Clinton impeachment hearings were a titillating affair. Clinton's "crime" would never have led to impeachment if it were a Republican president and everyone knew it.

Both of these impeachments were small potatoes compared to the crimes of Trump.

Impeachment depends on having "jurors" that take their oath and the Constitution seriously. Clearly, in the Trump era, most of the Republican senators would not vote to impeach one of their own party. Even if the VP and Speaker had been harmed or killed during the insurrection, they would still find a way to acquit him.

We all know how this ends. The Congress is not what it used to be 47 years ago. Its barely recognizable.

...about a white lie about a consensual affair.

We've expediated this process down, for an arguably more serious offence.

Hell, many republicans didn't even attend.

.. and I was actually represented in Congress by
a great Democrat, Barbara Jordan.

Texas has now gone to the dark side, and my
district is so gerrymandered that I no longer
have representation for my area.

This is true across all the red states; and it's
screwed up both the government and the
possibility of a fair justice system.

I hope this can be repaired before the next
election, but at least some good things will
happen before then.
