(6,265 posts)means nothing to the Republicans. If the death of people killed by trump insurrectionists and the death of one of their own mean nothing. Why would a Congressional record be something they or any republican alive now and "forever" care about? Getting their cult leader from under the gun and back in power somehow is all these trump cultists want.

(50,942 posts)Should we throw out the documents from Plessy v. Ferguson? Should those fights not have been fought, even though the right side lost?
Do you think the vileness of those decisions and the documentation and publication of countless other proceedings had no effect on what came after them?
We're a hundred and fifty years from the impeachment of Andrew Johnson. Do you think he was a good guy?

(3,370 posts)I understand the frustration, but we knew from the beginning this would happen. The Dems played it well - this makes it more public, historical, and it damns the GOP.
We dont have the time and luxury to be pessimistic. Channel the rage into beating the GOP down even further in 2022.

(115,669 posts)it's all on the record forever. In effect the GOP Senate was on trial, and the verdict of history will be that they lost. Trump is still not the president, he's still banned from Twitter, and even though he won't be barred from running for office in the future, he will be in such deep legal shit from now on (definitely civil suits and possibly criminal prosecution), that his chances of actually doing so will diminish pretty fast.

(7,593 posts)century version of "George Wallace" and I seriously doubt that many will even admit voting for him in future years.
I hoping the days of white supremacy are on their way out but I seriously doubt it. The RED states will begin a very serious effort later this year to further restrict voting rights, even more egregious gerrymandering, and don't be surprised if the GOP terrorist groups attack the government again.
Until there is a price to pay then it is simply a green light to continue their BS.
I personally hold all Trump voters responsible for this shitshow, including family members.

(18,402 posts)And no mention of DJ Trump will begin with anything other than incited an insurrection against the Capitol of the United Stateswhether he is convicted or not.
There was no real punishment attached to this trial anyway. The real punishment is that the truththe hard factsis known forever. The vote is of course known to be merely political, but the facts remain. An acquittal does not mean that these facts were untrue or in dispute.

(37,997 posts)But this is not a "show". It is an impeachment trial. The second one for a single ex-president. We need 67 senators to convict him. The GOP lacks the courage to do their duty.
It was never going to happen. I am sorry. I wish it were otherwise.

(2,768 posts)Republicans have gone so far down the rabbit hole that they no longer realize there was an entry point at all. This impeachment trial was for the historical record. One day in a far future, or maybe even a not so far one, people can see exactly how far the republican party would go to debase Democracy for a wannabe dictator.
