Sad, but true, that partisanship has always been so deep, even before our current hyper-partisan situation.
Democrats aren't the guilty ones here. We hold our own far more accountable than Republicans hold their members.
Even in the very likely event Trump is acquitted yet again, I expect at least 5-6 Republican votes to convict, and that will be, by historic standards, and even bigger precedent and indictment of Trump than the last impeachment. Sad that that's as good as probably gets.
We're learning that, at least at the presidential level, the 2/3 requirement for conviction when combined with toxic partisanship make the impeachment procedure pretty damned toothless.

(4,167 posts)Same with filibuster...there is too much partisanship to keep the filibuster.....and the same with requiring 3/4 of states to ratify amendment....seems like nothing can get done with those percentages

I'm no expert on this history by far, but my impression is that they thought that differences among the states would be a bigger influence than partisanship, and that state-by-state differences would be a more diffuse effect that created a useful form of diversity of opinion, with ever-shifting per-issue coalitions, instead of a paralyzing polarization on nearly every topic.
