My greatest fear after this impeachment effort
is that we will see another Clinton-style impeachment down the road. Bill Clinton was not impeached because he got a blow-job in the Oval Office. Bill Clinton was impeached because the Democrats had the audacity to attempt to impeach Richard Nixon for Nixon's criminal activity. As soon as the Republicans were able to take control of Congress, and as soon as a Democratic president showed the least little bit of objectionable activity, they jumped on him with both feet. That became the quintessential example of what-aboutism. Bill Clinton was impeached because Democrats in 1974 impeached Richard Nixon.
Jimmy Carter was a saint so there was no chance of impeaching him. Bill Clinton's oversized libido met with a young woman who liked the idea of sex with powerful men. Was that an unacceptable action on his part? Yes, even through the lens of social mores at the time. But remember, during and after that trial many Republicans were unmasked for the same sort of marital infidelities -- Newt Gingrich, Bob Livingston, Dan Burton, Helen Chenoweth, Henry Hyde. Republicans didn't really care about Clinton's sexual exploits; they wanted revenge for Richard Nixon.
I don't think that Republicans will be able to find a legitimate excuse to try to impeach Joe Biden. Like Jimmy Carter, he's squeaky clean. But the next Democratic president that doesn't dot every i and cross every t is going to be impeached for some ludicrous reason.
