Truth ...
The anger and frustration so many people felt on Saturday is how black folk feel every time we all see a video of a cop shooting an unarmed black man in the back, and white people tell us, "We don't know the whole story."

(11,746 posts)Putting the welfare of our nation ahead of their lust for power is not an option for them.
They can't go back to kind of sort of not embracing white supremacists (wink wink). There aren't enough of them which was their problem all along. The core of their base are the obscenely wealthy and the real goal was to get people to buy into the idea that their obscene wealth was justified by their innate superiority.
That ideology can't prevail without lying and cheating, so they have themselves trapped. We must continue to turn out at the polls, as I have been saying for years. I have taken a lot of abuse here for simply advocating "Vote Democratic." I don't care about the abuse; I passionately care about uniting against our true enemy.
When we bash each other we play into the hands of the fascists. Not enough of us understand that. Drawing off a mere 20,000 in a swing state can lose elections. And I'm sorry but 2000 and 2016 proved that to be true.

(11,746 posts)I'm sorry. Really and truly.
As a practicing lawyer, for over 35 years, I will tell you that's true. It's disconcerting, for sure, but unfortunately we all must work through that reality. We must persist. We must continue the struggle for justice. We have no other choice.
Never give up. Never.

(10,022 posts)Thank you, Cary!! I totally agree. Too many of our ancestors bled real blood and major agony so that we could preserve our union.
These assholes CAN NOT take it away.

(1,313 posts)You say justice isn't always possible - that's obvious and the point OP - that black people aren't surprised at the outcome because justice is SELDOM the outcome for us.

(22 posts)I consider myself a progressive, for sure...but only in the past four years have I even had an inkling of "oh, so this is how Black people have felt for the past 400 years." And what a bitter, bitter irony that it was an African American, Officer Eugene Goodman, whose courage, decency, and sense of duty very likely saved the country.

(18,486 posts)I'm glad you noted Eugene Goodman. He's a true hero.
The same thing goes (obviously in a different way) for black voters over the years. Black Americans are the most marginalized and mistreated citizens of this country, but election after election after election, we still step up, fight to overcome oppression, withstand suppression, stand in line for hours, face down threats, etc. to vote - usually for candidates we know won't protect ALL of our interests but are the best option available.
And while we're doing that, we have to listen to lots of entitled white people whine about how put upon they are because they had to "hold their nose" to vote for a candidate who doesn't agree with them on every single issue and even threaten not to vote at all because they need to send a "message."
Now that Trump was acquitted, some of these same people are carrying on about how "Democracy is BROKEN!" as if they just recently figured out that the system doesn't always work and this time, it didn't work for them.

(5,339 posts)particularly black women voters we would be suffering under a republican house and senate and a Trump second term. We aren't nearly grateful enough to these dedicated voters. Nor have we done enough to address the issues that are important to them.
