Republicans in 33 states have intro'd FOUR times number of voter restriction legislation as last yr

I keep harping on the FOR THE PEOPLE ACT, which is I hope the next thing Biden and Congress tackles after COVID relief, along with healthcare and climate change. HR1 - if passed in the house and senate would help restrict voter suppression laws.

According to a new Brennan Center study, state legislators from 33 states have introduced well over 4x's the number bills restricting voting compared to roughly this time last year-over 165 restrictive bills have been put forward.

https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/voting-laws-roundup-2021-0

After historic turnout and increased mail voting in 2020, state lawmakers across the country are pulling in opposite directions by introducing restrictive and expansive voting legislation.

In a backlash to historic voter turnout in the 2020 general election, and grounded in a rash of baseless and racist allegations of voter fraud and election irregularities, legislators have introduced well over four times the number of bills to restrict voting access as compared to roughly this time last year. Thirty-three states have introduced, prefiled, or carried over 165 restrictive bills this year (as compared to 35 such bills in fifteen states on February 3, 2020).

. . .

Overview of Restrictive Bills

Thus far this year, thirty-three states have introduced, prefiled, or carried over 165 bills to restrict voting access. These proposals primarily seek to: (1) limit mail voting access; (2) impose stricter voter ID requirements; (3) slash voter registration opportunities; and (4) enable more aggressive voter roll purges. These bills are an unmistakable response to the unfounded and dangerous lies about fraud that followed the 2020 election.

Arizona leads the nation in proposed voter suppression legislation in 2021, with 19 restrictive bills. Pennsylvania comes in second with 14 restrictive policy proposals, followed by Georgia (11 bills), and New Hampshire (10 bills).

Its why they are all still so cocky. And feel fine about making decisions that a majority of Americans do not like. They are fully confident that they can stifle democracy enough to get back in, and start to reverse all of Biden's early work.

people aren't calling reps and senators asking them to vote for it.

That would help with some of it. The legislation really does a lot to protect Democracy.

Schumer talked about it on Maddow just after Biden was sworn in: https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/policy-solutions/annotated-guide-people-act-2021

There should be a MASSIVE PUSH TO GET THIS PASSED in both houses before 2022. But with zero awareness, zero media on it and COVID + other priorities it will likely just fall off the radar.

All of the voter suppression laws passed by white supremacist majority state legislatures since the gutting of the Voting Rights Act fall squarely on his head. He can never remove its stain from his legacy.

Roberts, of course, the man who insisted the VRA was no longer needed because all that racist stuff was behind us and whites and blacks all live in harmony with mutual respect and love for each other. He either knew he was fantasizing or was ignorant of the country over whom he presides as Chief Justice. (See Shelby County v. Holder where Roberts’ insisted the bad old times of racism were way behind us.)
