(8,200 posts)I am so thankful that Biden was elected and that we can look forward to sanity and responsible govenment. It will be a challenge given that he will be facing the full force of the Republican Fascist Party of America. At long last more news commentators are finally calling them what they are: Fascists bastards. I have lost any respect for any Trump supporter and consider them traitors.

(11,560 posts)That was SO sweet! I would never get a reception like that from our dog. Cairns just aren't built that way. THAT is one loving dog!

(162 posts)I thought cairns and Scottish terriers were closely related but our Scottish terrier would be all over me. She's usually sedate but can be so loving. Our Mollie would be acting just like that dog.

(11,560 posts)Most of the time, if you call him he'll look back over his shoulder for sec and then it's "I don't think so," and he continues walking. Unless he thinks there's something in it for him, even crumbs, then he's all over it.
He'll jump up on my lap and cuddle, happy as a clam to be petted and lightly scratched...for 2 or 3 minutes, then it's back down and wandering around. He'll do that once a week, or less...usually less.

(162 posts)I've actually been lurking around here since George W Bush was president. I'm pretty quiet, but where dogs are concerned I can't keep my mouth shut. We had a Westie before Mollie. I think the Westies were bred from the cairns that turned out white. The Westie was wonderful too in a different way. He'd sit with you, usually beside you, for a minute or two and then he was down cavorting or just moving to the corner. He was white and a total ham. When we'd take him with us, people in the other cars would be pointing at him and smiling. We still miss him.

(35,956 posts)I think it's a Westie thing. Mine comes to me for tummy rubs, food and sitting on my lap for a few minutes while I scratch her ears, then she moves to the other end of the sofa and watches telly with me. They like affection, but on their terms. I used to think she wouldn't care if I vanished and didn't come back, but she was in doggy hospital at the start of lockdown last year for two weeks and I wasn't allowed to visit. She went crazy with joy when I turned up to get her, and now she'll try to follow me if I give someone else her lead when we're out walking and start to walk away..
Here's a pic I took of my Bridget just before she tried to chew my shoes to pieces. She is every bit as Evil as she is cute...

(162 posts)I think almost all Westies look alike. Yours looks just like ours did. Where did you get her? How could you not fall in love with that face. Does your dog have allergies? Ours had them pretty bad; I think his meds ruined his liver. He was only nine when he passed. That's mostly the reason we went with a Scottish terrier afterwards, plus the owner of the kennel said the Scotties were better dogs. I guess it's just a matter of what you like. They are very different dogs, but both totally lovable.
Your description and pic brought back memories. Thanks for posting.

(35,956 posts)I would have been happy with a Westie, Cairn or Scottie and I only went with a Westie because a breeder living nearby had a litter when I was looking. Bridget doesn't have allergies, but she's got the world's most sensitive tummy and after nearly losing her last year to a gastric bug, she's now on prescription food. I'm too scared to give her anything else because last time I gave her some of my food she started to get sick again....

(162 posts)Our Westie was super healthy until he was about 1 1/2 years. Then he got diarrhea which was a problem from then on. Then he started losing hair. A vet finally prescribed a medication that took care of that but probably was what ruined his liver. All the problems made us afraid to get another Westie, but we still would love to have one if we thought he would be healthy. Westies are wonderful.
Mollie is wonderful too, in a different way--much different personality but much more loving. She wants to be near us all the time. Will crawl in our lap and stay as long as we'll sit with her. She's hardly any trouble. Has been healthy except for an episode of constipation and that may have been caused by table treats (mistake, but the husband can't help himself). We are much more careful what we give her now though, and she's doing great at 8 years old. Since she's in the house we talk to her a lot and she seems to understand so much of what we're saying. It's uncanny sometimes.

(11,560 posts)One of those dogs that are impossibly cute. Must be a stuffy!
My Cairn does the head tilt thing, too. I call him Cairn of Steel because he has survived pancreatitis (was sloughing his intestinal lining which is even grosser-looking than it sounds), a bacterial infection through his intestinal tract, one gorging of Rolos and white chocolate, but they were too rich, so he threw them up, another chocolate incident, but it was dark chocolate, and he managed to get down almost half a pound of it, and keep it down until he was in a bad way. A VERY bad way. And when he was little, he got him by a car.
He is NOT afraid of cars, to the point that he barely acknowledges they exist. And he recovered from both the pancreatitis and the second chocolate incident in under 10 hours each.
Violet_Crumble
(35,956 posts)It suits him! Sounds like he might have nine lives. The vet thought mine had pancreatitis when she first got sick, but the test came back clear. Thankfully hasn't encountered chocolates or cars, though...
I know the connection between Westies and Cairns you were talking about in the post below this. I studied up on the breeds when I first decided to get a dog. They came about because the man who first started breeding the white Cairns mistakenly shot one of his Cairns when he was out hunting and mistook it for a fox. White dogs were easier to see and not shoot. Apart from the colour and a tiny bit of size difference, they're basically the same...
BobTheSubgenius
(11,560 posts)Westies were Cairns, at one time, and I guess were given their own designation...after proving that their differences (colour in the case) breed true? I don't know how that works, but at one time, that's what happened.
I'm sure the two breeds are very similar. The only Westie in my immediate orbit is very similar. Horus and Ozzie get along famously. 10 seconds of sniff, then ignore each other for the rest of their meeting.

(15,534 posts)This is such a touching clip. I'm an avid dog lover and during some trying times in my life, it was my dog that comforted me. Hospitals were smart when they began using therapy dogs to cheer up patients. They can be an important part of recovery.
