He's really a brilliant man, a futurist right when we need one. He's a proponent of safe nuclear energy, which IS the solution we've been waiting for. He recognizes the complications of 1 Billion people in the world eager to move into the 20th century by flipping a light switch for the first time and considers that in his solution.
Bottom line, we can end fossil fuels and remove sufficient CO2 from the atmosphere by 2050 for around $5T a year globally.
EDIT: and to add... if we can kick in $4T in less than a year to fight COVID, we can kick in $1T a year for the climate...

(38,310 posts)At the moment, the economic system doesn't price in the real cost of using fossil fuels.
Most users don't pay anything for the damage to the environment done by pollution from the petrol in their car or the coal or gas that created the electricity in their home.
"Right now, you don't see the pain you're causing as you emit carbon dioxide," is how Mr Gates puts it.
That's why he says governments have to intervene.

Solar and wind will not magically displace fossil fuels.
An economy powered solely by the sun, wind, and other "alternate" energy sources would look nothing like the economy many affluent people now enjoy. It might not even be able to support the current human population.

Add on a $100 fee to EVERY airline ticket... tomorrow. Maybe allow ONE flight a year with no fee.
$3/gal gasoline tax. Those under a certain income can claim the deduction on their taxes.
Wealth tax, capital gains tax reform, Wall St "per transaction" fees...
Every yacht that enters US waters can pay an excise tax.
etc, etc, etc...
