Associated Press
CARSON CITY, Nev. - A bill that would change Nevada's presidential caucus to a primary and make it the first nominating contest in the country has been unveiled.
The legislation from Nevada Assembly Speaker Jason Frierson, a Democrat, calls for Nevada to hold the primary on the second-to-last Tuesday in January. It would include 10 days of early voting that wraps up the Friday before the election.
The primary would be run by the state, instead of the caucuses run by political parties, and would be a separate election from a June primary held to pick party nominees and narrow the field of candidates for federal, state and local offices.
The proposed change would bump Iowa and New Hampshire from their early spots on the presidential primary calendar, upending decades of political tradition, and give a more urban and racially diverse group of voters a greater say in picking the party's nominee.

(1,406 posts)Why should we let 2 Red States with little EC votes determine our Candidates.
I always thought that Fl. would be a great first state, maybe not so much now.
A blue state or at least purple with some clout should lead us off.

(3,696 posts)I think the candidates that made it to Super Tuesday would have been different if we had not started our primary cycle in NH and IA and NV which I think is also a caucus state. Over the years I have really grown angry about Dems not establishing a more equitable primary schedule.

(3,696 posts)Those states that insist on keeping a caucus should go near the end of the primary cycle. The primary schedule as it exists now is simply unfair especially NH (few minorities) and IA (few minorities and a screwy caucus). We know that no candidate is going to win General without massive AA turnout. Shouldn't they have a say at the beginning on who that candidate should be?

(409 posts)But if we want real reform -
NO MORE CAUCUSES; and
move ALL primaries to March and April over a 6-8 week period with a mix of at least 6 states per week.
