A HuffPost/YouGov poll found many Americans are unaware of the idea, which has become a major Republican talking point.

The Republican Party has a new bogeyman: cancel culture.
One of former President Donald Trumps lawyers described his second impeachment trial as constitutional cancel culture. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), a leading voice among the most conservative members of the House, told a Fox News audience that fighting cancel culture is the number one issue for the country to address today. The theme of this years Conservative Political Action Conference? America Uncanceled.
A newly released HuffPost/YouGov poll, however, found only about half of Americans are even aware of the free speech-defeating monster lurking under the bed, though two-thirds of those who are aware are concerned about the threat.
The poll, conducted in late January, found that 52% of Americans had heard of the term cancel culture, a number thats virtually unchanged since last fall. Only 22% of those whove heard the term ― roughly a tenth of the public ― say theyve ever used it themselves. Among those who are familiar with the term, 67% say it is a very or somewhat serious problem.

(2,248 posts)It's the new "politically correct." They say it with a snear or a smile as if they're the victims and they won't be subject to it. YET, they still go on TV, write editorials, push out tweets and posts, hold rallies and meetings.

(15,794 posts)I mean most of us read a lot of political things, but most Americans maybe watch a 30 minute local news show. Most dont know who gets fired for what and why. I talk to my neighbors and mention a situation and they look at me like I have two heads.

(11,866 posts)causing the Democrats to double down on morality to the extent that a right wing internet mob can target a Democrat and the Democrats rush to throw that Democtrat overboard like: "see... we don't discriminate when it comes to cancelling someone who does not meet the code."
However, no matter what a Republican does. the GOP will never rush to judge that person and will defend their wrong doing to the death.
Example: What is currently happening to Andrew Cuomo. I live in NYS and was a witness to what happened in this state.
When the virus began to explode in nursing homes, no one really knew what was unfolding. With no help from the CDC or the Federal Government Cuomo was forced to walk a very difficult line, between informing the populace and informing the nursing home providers, who had no control; over the influx of virus that was spreading unabated from care givers to the elderly in their care WITHOUT PPE OR ANY GUIDELINES. Cuomo chose to soft pedal the growing alarm, not only because of the threat of the virus but because of the growing right wing meme within the state against the nursing home owners, who are by and large... wait for it... Jewish.
Now the right sees a clear path to grab a scalp for the deposed king, and take down one of his most hated foes, Andrew Cuomo,
and like clockwork... Democrats are piling on.

(90,336 posts)... I feel until lately democrats have been minimizing the effects of coordinated messaging.

(11,866 posts)This past summer people in my community were walking around with "Cuomo killed my grandma" tee shirts.
Democrats are getting better on messaging, but they are still lagging way behind.

(32,083 posts)It strikes me as a new branding of their usual "People are calling me out for being a racist/misogynist/homophobe/general asshole, and I don't like it."

(22,121 posts)things to be canceled.
The far more important thing to remember is that words have consequences. republicans have lost their way and gutter mouth their way through a normal election cycle since they really have nothing to offer normal, everyday Americans, so they cry and moan about cancel culture. More republican BS.

(1,202 posts)I know two people who never heard of it but felt it. Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder, and Howard Cosell. The repubs are making this out like it's a new phenomena and it certainly isn't. People have been protesting, picketing, revolting, boycotting, etc. for ages. Carrie Nation closed more bars than Covid lol.

(5,494 posts)If I were to scream the N-word at someone (not that I would), and it became public, thats embarrassing to my place of work, since they hired me. Naturally, they would want to cut all ties.
I also believe in consumer choice. If consumers want to boycott a product or medium for any reason, thats their right. You cant force someone to consume something, or tell others not to consume it.
Finally, theres something funny about rich, powerful public figures like Ted Cruz, J.K. Rowling, and Donald Trump Jr. screaming about being cancelled by powerless commoners with a rice-sized portion of their wealth and influence. Its the ultimate form of entitlement - You will sit down, shut up, and listen what I have to say, and dont you dare disagree with it!
