I always thought that not having winter plays a part in the southern states voting republican. Lack of empathy, It cost a lot of money to heat a home. For some. its all the money they make. People in the south do not know what its like to be so cold that you think you could die. They also don't
know what its like to pick between heating your house or buying food.

(798 posts)I do know what it's like to be so HOT I thought I would die; and I know from personal experience that air-conditioning is not cheap. And yes, many do know what it's like to pick between heating and food. I've witnessed that right here in the Deep South. So we all lack empathy? I don't think so. Nice try painting us all with such a broad brush!
Its gets hot in the north to. Its not the same as being cold. And I did not say all southerners.

(102,268 posts)and I've experienced it in the Deep South. A miserable way to die for those without a means to cool themselves, too--something other areas of the country experience with major heat waves and electricity blackouts as well. I know intense cold too. Denver faced minus 35 degree F windchill and -12 degrees real temps the past several days. But looking back at historical trends, that is NOTHING. The citys coldest temperature is 29 below zero, which occurred Jan. 9, 1875. The city has hit 20 below zero and colder 29 times in our history since 1872, including most recently in the 1990s. So, I find no correlation between any of these issues and being Republican. As John Dean published more than a decade and a half ago, the correlation seems to be between a psychological trend toward authoritarianism with accompanying lack/deficiency of empathy--that's what seems to predict conservatism and surely today's Trump Republicans.

(6,474 posts)never had a heating bill in winter which was close to my summer bill for air conditioning--usually 3-4 times my heating bill--so we're even
cost a lot more to heat a house in the north.
Nothing whatsoever to do with it. IMO, it's the evangelical influence in the rural areas of the south and the
constant drum beat of right wing radio. For example, most of he larger population centers in Texas lean soundly blue.
There is of course more diversity in the cities and groups of highly educated people...contrasted with a mostly
white rural underclass that is religious. At least food in the freezer won't spoil in cold weather.
right wing hate radio is a big problem

Sending warming thoughts your way fellow Democrats.
This too shall pass.
