see those wires under the fireplace insert?
in that area there is a battery box that accepts 2 D batteries. Just pop them in.
We did this in our house. Insert the batteries, flip the wall switch, the fire comes on and runs ---- even with no power in the house. (this is not my house I found this tweet)
models differ but our front screen came right off - just pull up gently and slide out. No need to remove the glass.

(25,467 posts)The tweet is misleading. Some gas fireplaces have battery backups so they can be started when there's no power. This is one of them.

(182,776 posts)If it had an auto starter it doesnt work any more. Wed have preferred a regular fireplace when we bought this house but gas will work without electricity so....
No power lines or anything above ground. So far no outages. Trees snapping a lot.

(1,202 posts)2 D batteries cannot generate the power of 115VAC to run the heating elements. It may turn on the fake flames however.

(26,068 posts)It ignites the gas, and then it runs fine.

(1,202 posts)I can see if it's a gas fireplace. The tweet says it's an electric fireplace.

(26,068 posts)ie ignition, blower, fan.
Mine had a vertical pilot I could do with this during ice storms. The blower didn't work, of course, but it kept it warm enough to be comfortable under some blankets.

(1,202 posts)That makes total sense.

(4,390 posts)it's not blowing out the hot air like it used to, so I'm guessing we need a new $158 heating element/blower part - adding it to household maintenance while we use the other oscillating heater. Thank goodness, we didn't get all that predicted white stuff or lose power.
Can't hook up the doggies on the patio; the screen on the door is frozen shut fast in the track - I could run the hair dryer along the track (should have pushed it on the side without the door) but it would just freeze over again in minutes until all the ice/H2O evaporates out of the track. Then the door would probably freeze us in too! It happens (shrug).

(2,099 posts)Mine takes 4 AA batteries. And they will power the solenoid to open the gas flow and provide power to the glow plug to ignite the gas. In my part of the country it is nice and we dont need the fireplace. If you need the gas fireplace for heat during the storms to the east, take off the front screen or glass and look underneath. You should see a battery case of some kind. I hope it will work for you to keep you from freezing. Otherwise, your best bet is to layer on blankets, use chair cushions and pillows as additional insulation, and build a fort.

Of course that was back in the dark ages of 1970-something.
