More than half of Republican voters think the US needs a new mainstream third party, according to a recent poll.
A recently released Gallup poll found that there has been a surge among Republican voters who think the US needs a new third party to better represent Americans' interests.
According to the poll, between 63 and 70 per cent of Republicans supported a new party. In September, only 40 per cent of Republicans shared that view.
The results appear to be a direct response to Donald Trump's defeat in the 2020 US election and the perception by his supporters that Republicans did not do enough to advance his false claims that his loss was the result of massive voter fraud.

(31,261 posts)I would welcome the Never Trump people to the Democratic Party, but after reading about the goings on of the Lincoln Project leaders, I am not sure that they have the ethics that we demand of Democrats.

(24,455 posts)By legit, I mean, the parties should be trying to out perform each other in delivering services to their constituents. I think we'd be better served with a parliamentary system given the non-existent state of the United States.

(31,261 posts)I think that we need to break up into two countries and maintain a common defense for two decades until each country can defend itself.
The right comes up with crazy movement after crazy movement, and each time the right gets worse. We really need to consider breaking up to form a progressive country and a separate rightwing country, and give minors the option to freely change countries once, between the age range of 18-25 years old. We can either do that, or keep barreling toward civil war. The Capitol insurrection and what happened in state capitols are loud warning horns, IMO, telling us that we no longer have a country where an overwhelming number of people are willing to work for a common goal.

(31,261 posts)Progressive urban, suburban and rural people would inhabit a contiguous country and the righties the other contiguous country. That would require people moving, and those that can avoid to move can get financial assistance to move. Each country should have warm and cooler parts, which means it should be split along the continental divide, to form an eastern nation and a western nation.

(31,261 posts)At first I dismissed it as hotheaded imagination because of disgust with rightwing people. But rightwing people have become more and more extreme and dangerous, if that continues, there wont be an option but to voluntarily form two countries, or fight a civil war where one side defeats the other. Given how dispersed righties are in society, neighborhoods, regions, a civil war would be a massively bloody affair. So, I prefer just breaking up the country and hard physically separating the two sides.

(31,261 posts)There is no way the civil war that you detailed wont be anything but exceptionally bloody. In fact, I believe that people in urban and urban-suburban areas would need to war with their own police forces first off and defeat them, because a lot of police are righties and unfortunately too many of them hold extremist views. So, we evaluate how to do it and then split up into two countries.

(63,202 posts)Hell, form three new parties, so that all the voters on the Right are well represented.
In fact, make it four.

(22,112 posts)that they bought all of this on themselves by putting forth a moronic candidate for president in 2020. A truly moronic and idiotic president. Of all of the people in the republican column, they had to pick literally the dumbest one of them all. Remember Windmill Cancer? How about buying or exchanging Greenland for something else, Denmark? Or claiming that he invented or started the use of some words, etc.
You can't make this crap up.
Go ahead, start your own 3rd Party. There will be no money because your donors know that the chances of a 3rd party being successful in this Country and having a majority enough to do any good is basically slim to zero. People like this, you can't tell them anything anyway, they're the ones invaded the Capitol building, and threatening everybody else in this Country.
I guess they should call themselves the 'Moron's Club' or something like that, some catchy name so the basement pond scum will be attracted to the name of the group, like 'Oath Keepers' (what a joke) etc.

(5,443 posts)Also, the traditional GOP is free-market-oriented, while Trumpists are protectionist, but economics is probably not really their concern. MAGA party would care most about being a regressive traditional Christian-oriented party to oppose liberal social changes with a strong nativist flavor.
