Unleaded is sold on the commodity market just like crude.
As Texas refineries went down this weak, commodity speculators started driving up the cost of unleaded at the wholesale level.
One of the biggest economic mistakes of the 20th century was allowing the finished goods to be commoditized. It completely eliminated competition by price from the refining industry.
The same people who claim free markets & competition are the solution to everything added an unnecessary layer of profit taking and a point of competition vanished. A terrible decision.
