It being Presidents Day week, his kids are probably on a winter break from school. If the Senate was expected to be in recess (I don't know if it was), why not admit that they planned a nice family vacation to Mexico? Making up some transparent BS about accompanying his daughters to Mexico and heading immediately back being the plan all along?? 
Just admit you had plans for a nice vacation and maybe even follow through with them, if there's nothing useful you could be doing to help (not that I expect such an admission). If there's really any purpose (preferably some purpose beyond improved optics) to be served by returning, go ahead and change your plans and make an immediate return. But OWN IT. Have the gonads to say "Yes, we intended to utilize the break to do something nice with the kids. Because of conditions in Texas, I changed my plans" (Again, preferably followed by some sort of description of plans to assist emergency efforts.)
