Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have formally split from Britains royal family after informing Queen Elizabeth II that they have absolutely no intention of returning from their new lives in the United States. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex sensationally announced last year that they would be bringing an end to their lives as working royals. Following a year-long review of the new arrangement, and after recent discussions between the family members, Harry and Meghan have told the queen that they believe their decision to quit was the right call.
Buckingham Palace published a statement on Friday morning, saying that the couple has confirmed to Her Majesty the Queen that they will not be returning as working members of the Royal Family, and that, while the remaining royals are saddened by their decision, Harry and Meghan will always remain much loved members of the family.
Those warm words were followed up by confirmation that the couple will be stripped of their honorary military appointments and royal patronages, which will be given to loyal family members. Harry and Meghan, who now live in California, reportedly decided to give an interview to their friend Oprah Winfrey after becoming aware that they were going to be stripped of all their remaining royal links. The interview, organized by Meghan, is set to air on CBS on March 7.
The couple announced last week that theyre expecting another child. Shortly after the Buckingham Palace statement was published, a spokesperson for the couple said: As evidenced by their work over the past year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the U.K. and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organizations they have represented regardless of official role. We can all live a life of service. Service is universal.

(32,017 posts)Does that mean that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will no longer appear on the Civil List? In other words, will they no longer be entitled to an allowance from the UK Parliament? Does Meagan make enough money, on her own, to support the family? I assume that Harry has neither a job nor a steady source of income. This is strange, to say the least.

(9,998 posts)Seems to me the only significance Harry had, is the fact he WAS royalty. Now he's simply a common individual.
And Meghan's only significance, other than being in a semi-popular tv show, is through the fact she was a common individual, who married into royalty.
I think it's funny that the media will continue to focus on them, and they will more or less profit off the fact that they WERE royalty, even though they no longer are.

Danny Baker fired by BBC over royal baby chimp tweet
https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-48212693
The BBC has sacked Danny Baker, saying he showed a "serious error of judgement" over his tweet about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's baby.
The tweet, which he later deleted but which has been circulated on social media, showed an image of a couple holding hands with a chimpanzee dressed in clothes with the caption: "Royal Baby leaves hospital". The BBC 5 Live presenter was accused of mocking the duchess's racial heritage.
Baker claimed it was a "stupid gag". The 61-year-old presented a Saturday morning show on the network. The corporation said Baker's tweet "goes against the values we as a station aim to embody". It added: "Danny's a brilliant broadcaster but will no longer be presenting a weekly show with us."

(11,296 posts)and the 'royal' attitude is you just have to shrug this kind of thing off. I suspect that Markle had a little different attitude toward the toxic sleaze that the British press considers a blood sport -- together with the idea that she was just suppose to "suck it up." Essentially said "F THAT!" And made it clear that she didn't intend to 'stand down' just because she married into a family that didn't care for the 'fuss.'
She was right. You don't combat this cancerous crap by "just letting it go." And the sad fact is that the 'family' didn't have the backbone to go there with her .... Given that -- at some point you just have to say "you do you ..."

(11,296 posts)(IMO) this 'cooling off' or probation period was pretty much all on the part of the palace. Meghan and Harry were pretty clear on what they wanted, and what they intended to do, a good while back. Made their plans, explained at length (both publicly and privately), and then made the corresponding moves. They haven't changed their minds -- no one really expected them to -- and thus this 'announcement' really represents nothing more than what has already been decided. Pre-determined in fact.
Good on them. And best wishes to everyone involved.

(13,783 posts)... seeing this post here on DU reminds me of what a memory trip The Crown has been for me. My first memory of TV, after that of my mother trying to get a signal to our new one and seeing the evening news, was the coronation of Queen Elizabeth, 24 hours delayed, but a big, technological deal. I had a vivid memory of a tent having been erected around her for the annointing of oil. I always wondered about that. What... did they bare her breast? The Crown showed me that it was just over their heads so the TV cameras couldn't film the sacred moment. I was 7 at the time. I had some vague memory of absolutely everything that happened of a public nature in that series. England was a f...ing big deal when I was a kid.

(6,390 posts)...every once awhile they love a scandal on the Royals. And if there isn't one, they manufacture one. All in all, I don't trust any of the reporting on them.
Harry and Meghan already have set themselves up financially so they don't need any royal money and I'd argue it was their plan the whole time to step away, the timing was the result of British tabloids.
However, Meghan being American, meant she was going to eventually break some kind of etiquette or pomp and circumstance sooner of later. And the tabloids were salivating on the prospect of making a mountain out of a mole hill, so they were target number one. Until, they took most of that away from them.
Now all they can do is sour grapes and speculate friction in the family and scream for the umpteenth time that they walked away from royalty and Meghan is some kind magical wizarding with temptress and manipulating Harry....whatever. The real issue is they were counting on more issues sold and website clicks...and just like that, they are gone.
Also, given that Prince Charles has already telegraphed on planning to reduce the need for royal family members for events, going to guess some in the family are actually happy as this may save a few jobs.
