(8,556 posts)My husband is a courier here in NC and it is causing major disruptions in service. A huge problem appears to be that they don't have enough people in Memphis who can actually get to work to process packages due to the road conditions. Over 40k containers ( they call them 'cans') sitting there, waiting to be sorted and processed. And now cans sitting in every FedEx ramp in every airport because there's no room left at the hub for them. The planes can get the packages to Memphis, but they would be stuck there with their cargo waiting. Over 1.2 million packages as of yesterday.

(374 posts)I don't work for FedEx but I've heard rumors that only around 10% of the hub employees were able to get to work. I do know that FedEx has temporarily suspended pick ups and has also temporarily stopped accepting packages dropped off at their facilities here.
We've gotten record amounts of snow and set more records for the number of days below freezing. Memphis only has 14 plows and contracted another 7, but it's just not enough to keep the roads clear. I know many here just won't be able to fathom how this can be but we just don't get this kind of weather often enough to justify buying and maintaining more equipment. Road crews have been working 16 hour days trying to keep the main roads clear but the residential roads are still a mess.
The local news reported that the utility company has repaired 60 water mains this week and are currently working on 5 more. They said that 100 out of 140 wells are currently operation. They have issued a boil water alert out of caution because the low pressure could possibly allow bacteria to enter the water lines.
The temperature is finally supposed to be above freezing tomorrow so hopefully things will get cleared in the next few days.
