(9,153 posts)That's a real skill, being able to deliver a truly hilarious line while keeping a straight face.
Just before this part of the speech he gets in a dig at Republicans trying to blame Democrats for the Great Depression, which of course happened after twelve years of Republican control of the White House, both chambers of Congress, and pretty much the entire federal judiciary.
He even uses the word "lugubrious" which has to be a unique event in American political speeches.
"There's a rather lugubrious saying that you should never mention the word 'rope' in the house of a man who has been hanged. Well, if I were a Republican speaking in mixed company, the very last word in the entire dictionary that I would use is that word 'Depression.'" That's not quite the exact quote, but it's close.
The whole speech is a gem.

(17,583 posts)at the Fala joke, but FDR just continued on as if it there was complete silence. No wonder my grandmother had that well-known print of FDR hanging on her bedroom wall until the day she died.

(82,849 posts)Notice that FDR, recounting the lie, scolds "the Republican fiction writers - in Congress and out" and reels off the amounts allegedly wasted in retrieving Fala: 2 or 3 or 8 or 20 million dollars. The exact same thing happens today. The tales of the Republicans grow in the telling, and the numbers mount up with each re-telling. When President Biden pulled the plug on the Keystone XL pipeline, it was going to cost a thousand jobs. No two thousand. 25,000! The last number I recall seeing was in the neighborhood of 100,000 jobs lost.
