Dewine trying to sell Ohio

The $50 million question - how to sell Ohio?

A billboard in Seattle that's part of the Ohio Is for Leaders ad campaign from JobsOhio. Gov. Mike DeWine is proposing a separate $50 million marketing effort to lure folks from high-cost states to move to low-cost Ohio, but is such an expenditure wise or likely to succeed? The Editorial Board Roundtable weighs the odds.

In announcing his $74.5 billion two-year state budget proposal earlier this month, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine revealed he wants to spend $50 million on an ad campaign to induce residents of high-cost states to move to low-cost Ohio -- sensing a pandemic opportunity, he said.

“As people are packing up and leaving the coasts looking for more affordable places to live, more affordable places to locate their businesses and live their lives, we want to invite them here,” DeWine said.

Challenged on whether coastal progressives would want to move to Ohio, with its anti-green energy policies and conservative legislative agenda of anti-abortion, pro-gun measures, DeWine added: “Ohio is a welcoming place. I don’t care who you are. We want you to come to Ohio. It’s a progressive state. It’s a state that has its fiscal house in order.”

Lt. Gov. Jon Husted chimed in: “As the governor mentioned we have small towns with conservative values, and we have cities with progressive values. Whatever you want, we’ve got it. And the good news is it’s affordable.”

Two progressive lawmakers had fun with those comments, listing 50 policy and legislative actions in a cleveland.com op-ed that they thought would go much farther (and at a lot lower cost) to establishing Ohio’s attractiveness to progressive transplants.

Around the same time, JobsOhio billboards started popping up in major cities -- part of a separate “Ohio is for Leaders” effort by the quasi-public jobs agency aimed at getting businesses to relocate. One advised Seattle executives to “Live where you can actually save for a rainy day.” Another, in Boston, boosted Ohio’s “0% state corporate income tax.” But the ad campaign drew some local boos when cleveland.com reported the ad contract was let outside Oh

Instead of cutting their pay. More wasteful spending by the Republican Party!

...to retire to. Port Townsend, Wash is much more liberally attractive than Franklin Ohio...( and a hell of a lot more expensive!)

Don't forget the hand sanitizer when you're done.

Yet another example of the rock-solid GQP belief that there's nothing that can't be solved with the right PR campaign.
