(9,952 posts)doing it too much and needs to reel it back. But... Yea Beto stepping in there day one to help Texans, save lives and clearly showing the difference of Democratic leadership and Republican leadership, or lack of.
Mild criticism because I love the guy and want him in our goverenment.

(42,862 posts)I do not think it's unreasonable to have HIGHER standards of etiquette and HIGHER expectations from our elected representatives, our former elected reps, and ANY Democrat in the public eye.
Anything else is just tacky and classless. He needs to grow up and get control of his emotions and his vocabulary. Shit like that is so fucking unnecessary!
See? I can do that, because I'm not in the public-eye as he is. All I'm trying to say is that WE DESERVE BETTER!!

(9,952 posts)cut back on the cussing. He feels a lot like me in cussing yet I am well able to not use fuck in certain social environments. Work would be one of the places.

(42,862 posts)I guess I just have higher standards when it comes to what I expect (and what I'm willing to accept) from those who represent our party.

(9,952 posts)My sons and I have had a lot of conversation about my lack of filter, lol and they love me anyway. They see the good in it.
I understand and can easily hear Beto because he is so much like me in that respect. I do not think it even comes close to disrespecting someone for this because there is an honesty and passion and truth in Beto's voice. Throw in smart and effective, I really love what we have in Beto. I love him riding the skateboard in whataburger. My son campaigned for him in Texas, in college and I have a huge fondness for the man. A lot of respect. And there are appropriate times, but... mellow out the cussing. I certainly do not see that he does not have high standards, I guess. I would like to see him as Gov of Texas, and I would hold him in very high standards and appreciation. I have a woman Gov in a blue state. It feels good.

(9,952 posts)of who to vote for clearly tells me something weird happened in our conversation.

(15,124 posts)In my view, this boils down to: Might this offend some GOOD folks---people who post here and, like me, occasionally use language---in private---that peels paint and stuns guppies? Are there people in our communities who are considering voting Democratic but are looking for a reason not to?
I think the answer to both of those is "yes".
Maybe we should bring back that "WWJD?"---What Would Joe Do? (And, yes, I do remember "This is a big fuckin' deal!", but that was not intended for public consumption)
I'm with you, NJ.

(42,862 posts)In a primary, his inability to refrain from swearing and dropping the F-bomb would make me vote for someone ELSE.
I think we should expect more from elected representatives, our former elected representatives, and any Democrat in the public eye. We should hold them to a higher standard. He's LOWERING standards of public officials by his inability to refrain from using gutter talk.

(42,862 posts)But Beto is a smart fellow. He could make better use of his vocabulary. He's not in college and the listeners are not his college buddies. He should be professional and respectful. He should speak as though he were talking to his grandmother... or mother... or Michelle Obama.
I think less of him because of it. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
All the ones who are cheering-on his tasteless behavior are the same ones who support him no matter what. For the folks he's trying to convince or persuade... this isn't the way to go about doing it.

(3,013 posts)...just name a replacement rather than totally run an election with new candidates? If the former, probably not worth it. Of course one maybe could recall the Gov too given the lack of preparedness for the storm, poor response in the aftermath and the less than stellar response to Covid. Some serious challenges like these to sitting Repubs in flippable states would be a big kick in the butt to Repubs who think do nothing and then blaming others when things break bad is a path to success. Until people revolt (peacefully please) against these tactics of governance, there will be no progress.

(2,217 posts)In Texas, Republican leaders may dress up as cowboys and cuss. They are allowed to make bald faced lies. They can fake rage till it turns real about things that don't matter one bit to them. Wear a flag or beat a police man to death with it, fine, but don't let someone take a knee.
Democrats and people who care, have to apologize after they point out an obvious lie or say something that might be taken wrong by children.
Patriotism is love for a place and the inhabitants. AOC and Beto are both Texas patriots. AOC, not from Texas, but with more right to the title Patriot than any Republican who has not faced enemy fire in another country. Beto should keep cussing. He has righteous reasons for his anger and speech. The moment Republicans all turn on and reject Trump and all their other representatives for gross behavior and speech, I will want Beto to stop cussing. Till then, when I hear dog whistles, and in Texas, every tenth sentence from a white is expected to have a dog whistle, I will ignore any cussing.

(9,670 posts)of the degeneration of our politics.
Now is not the time to be timid. Now is not the time to mince words, to pull punches, or to mask our indignance.
The truth is plain to see. It's also hiding in plain sight. Time to call it what it is. It's Ted Cruz. And he's a fucker.

(14,013 posts)the Capitol. It was the first time I can ever recall those words NOT be bleeped out on TV.
Personally, I am not a fan of using "anglo saxon" words when others suffice. But I realize that outlook is losing favor these days, especially among young folks. Those words are tossed in to casual conversation all the time now, but they still make me wince.
(My father was a preacher, and though he never actually washed my mouth out with soap, using "anglo saxon" words would land you in big trouble.)

(39 posts)His schtick? I have only seen one other time where Beto cussed on tv and that was after the elPaso mass shooting. In that moment, it was absolutely ok to be that angry and express it. The f-bomb in this clip is during a discussion for a podcast/vlodcast with MediasTouch. Very informal setting. Not an interview on MSM or an official statement, or a setting that would would require a bit of a filter.
I think Beto is simply speaking. I think he also has enough sense and class to filter himself when required. Let me just say, if Beto went to meet the queen of England, I think he would embarrass us a lot less than the last president did.

(18,123 posts)As someone who was in the public eye, I was very careful about my language and behavior. You never know when it might offend someone who is or might be a client or donor. It's very easy to get your point across without resorting to that sort of thing. Yes, most people are not going to be bothered, but a politician in a purple state cannot afford to disturb anyone.
